COLUMBUS, Ohio – Head coach Anne Wilkinson claimed her 200th victory at Ohio State Sunday after the No. 15 Ohio State field hockey team posted a 1-0 shutout at No. 18 UNH in Durham, N.H. Senior forward Danica Deckard scored the lone goal in the contest, while the OSU defense limited the Wildcats to seven shots, including two in the final 35 minutes. The win puts the Buckeyes at 1-1 after the opening weekend of 2012.
“I am so proud of the way the Buckeyes competed today from start to finish,” Wilkinson said. “The leadership and determination really stood out in the final minutes of the game.”
Wilkinson, who is in her 17th year at the helm of the Scarlet and Gray, becomes the first head coach in program history to hit the 200-win mark.
Deckard, a native of Selinsgrove, Pa., scored her second goal of the season at 29:47 when she redirected a UNH back pass inside the right post of the cage. Deckard, who wears No. 23, now has 23 career goals for the Scarlet and Gray.
The Ohio State defense got stronger as the game continued and denied UNH a shot or a corner for the final 20 minutes of competition. Junior goalkeeper Emma Voelker also had a day to remember, claiming her first career victory to improve to 1-1 on the season. She notched four saves with three in the first half.
Overall, Ohio State held a 12-7 advantage in shots and a 7-4 lead penalty corners. The OSU backfield allowed just two corners in each half against UNH.
The Buckeyes will now prepare for their second road test of the year, traveling to play American Aug. 31 in Washington, D.C., before taking on top-ranked Maryland Sept. 2 in College Park, Md.
