Forward from Scarborough, Ontario, scored three goals and had an assist in sweep of North Dakota
COLUMBUS, Ohio Natalie Spooner, a freshman forward on the Ohio State women’s hockey team, earned the WCHA’s Rookie of the Week award, the Western Collegiate Hockey Association announced Wednesday. It is the fourth Rookie of the Week honor for Spooner with the Buckeyes earning seven player of the week awards overall this season.
Spooner factored into half of Ohio State’s scoring with three goals and an assist in a home sweep of WCHA opponent North Dakota, Feb. 6-7. The native of Scarborough, Ontario, scored the fourth goal in the Buckeyes’ 4-1 win Friday. She then built the OSU lead Saturday by scoring a goal in both the first and second periods before assisting on the third Buckeye lamplighter in the 4-2 victory.
The second game was Spooner’s 10th multiple-point performance of the season and sixth game with multiple goals. Spooner was plus-4 and a mainstay on the Buckeye penalty kill that was 16-of-19 for the series.
With her three goals, Spooner increased her team lead in the category to 20. She is just the fifth Buckeye to reach the 20-goal mark in a season and only the second to do it as a freshman.
