Rookie Vicky Villanueva leads the team with round of 3-over 75
OWINGS MILLS, Md. The Ohio State women’s golf team carded a second round score of 311 (+23) Wednesday to sit in 23rd place at the 2009 NCAA Championships with a 36-hole score of 634. The Buckeyes were led by Big Ten Freshman of the Year Vicky Villanueva, who fired a round of 3-over 75 on the par 72, 6,443-yard course at Caves Valley Golf Club just outside of Baltimore.
Halfway through the 72-hole event, UCLA moved into the lead over the 24-team field with a round of 5-over 293, the low team score for the tournament. The Bruins have a total of 589 (+13) and lead Pac-10 rival and second-place USC by seven strokes. Denver, who led after the first day, moved to third at 22-over.
Weather in the Baltimore area was ideal for the second day in a row with clear skies, just a slight breeze and temperatures in the low to mid-70s.
Villanueva had a solid start to her second round and made par on her first five holes. The native of Chacabuco, Argentina, made the turn at 2-over with bogeys on Nos. 6 and 9.
After starting the back nine strong with par on the Nos. 10-12 and a birdie on the par 5 13th hole, Villanueva erred with a double-bogey on 16 to peak at 4-over. She turned around and birdied 17 and closed with a par on 18 for a solid score to move into a tie for 48th place at 153.
Tied with Villanueva is junior Emma Jandel. The junior from Dayton, Ohio, stormed out of the gates and made three birdies in her opening nine holes with just one hiccup, a double bogey, on the par 5 No. 3. Jandel had a tough time after the turn though, and played the back nine at 7-over for a round of 76.
In Hong Lim came back from her opening round of 83 to post a second round score of 5-over 77. The sophomore from Melbourne, Australia, was 2-over on the front nine and 3-over on the back with a birdie on the par 4 No. 9. Lim is tied for 98th place with a total of 160.
Rounding out the Buckeyes lineup were seniors Jessica Hauser and Gemma Webster. Hauser shaved 12 strokes off her opening round for a score of 81, while Webster carded her second-consecutive round of 87. Both are tied for 125th place at 174.
The third round of the NCAA championships begins Thursday at 7:30 a.m. The Buckeyes will tee off of the 10th tee between 7:30-8:10 a.m. Live scoring for the event is available on www.golfstat.com and holes 16-18 will be streamed live on www.NCAA.com.
