COLUMBUS, Ohio The Big Ten Conference announced Tuesday it has tabbed Wendy Allen (So., Moreno Valley, Calif./Moreno Valley), a member of the No. 25 Ohio State softball team, its player of the week for the week ending April 14. It is the second weekly honor earned by Allen in 2002 and the fourth for the team.
“It was an amazing weekend and this team really played hard to get the wins,” Allen said. “I know I had a good weekend and that was because of how well the team played. The defense behind was great and the whole lineup was hitting well. I earned the award but I represent the whole team so the entire team is recognized. It feels great that we are on a roll now.”
Allen went 9-for-12 (.750) at the plate with three home runs and pitched two solid outings for the Buckeyes in two game sweeps of No. 20 Iowa and Northwestern on the road over the weekend and help OSU to a 38-9 overall record, a 9-3 mark in the Big Ten and third place in the conference standings. She clubbed two home runs in the opening game of the weekend with Iowa and struck out six batters to lead the charge in a 2-0 win, the first for a Buckeye team in Iowa City, Iowa, since 1994.
In the second game, Allen went 2-for-3 at the plate with a run scored and a sacrifice bunt to put a runner in scoring position as OSU defeated UI, 4-2 in nine innings. At NU Sunday, Allen went 3-for-3 with a solo home run, a single and a double as well as another sacrifice. In the weekend finale, Allen went 2-for-3 with an RBI single and a double while striking out nine and allowing one earned run, the first of the conference season for the left handed hurler. She leads the Big Ten with a 0.23 ERA.
The Buckeyes play host the Morehead State Eagles at 3 p.m. Wednesday in a doubleheader at Buckeye Field. OSU will face Purdue at 3 p.m. Friday and noon Saturday (Senior Day) before facing Illinois in a doubleheader at noon Sunday. At the conclusion of the game with PU Saturday, the program will honor its five seniors, Anna Smith (Sr., Walnut, Calif./Diamond Bar), Stacy Roth (Sr., Wauseon, Ohio/Wauseon), Chrissy Fowler (Sr., Utica, Ohio/Wright State), Sarah West (Sr., Galloway, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson) and Jenn Elwell (Sr., Dearborn Heights, Mich./Divine Child).
