COLUMBUS, Ohio — Competing in just his second match of the season after spending the previous three months rehabbing an injury, redshirt senior Nathan Tomasello tore through fourth-ranked Ethan Lizak of Minnesota en route to an 18-3 tech fall. Tomasello’s statement-making performance earned him Big Ten Wrestler of the Week, USA Wrestling Athlete of the Week and NCAA Wrestler of the Week distinction. This marks the fourth B1G weekly award of his career and he becomes the third Buckeye to receive the conference recognition this season.
Tomasello showed no signs off rust after making his season debut just seven days earlier. Not only was he victorious in the Top-5 clash, but he dominated with the 18-3 tech fall. A slow start resulted in a slim 2-0 edge entering the second period. Tomasello then turned it up a notch in the second, however, electing to start in the neutral position and backing it up with three takedowns and a four-point nearfall. The top-ranked 125-pounder in the country kept the pedal to the metal in the final frame, closing it out before the clock hit 0:00 with two more takedowns to trigger the bout-halting tech fall.
Tomasello, a native of Parma, Ohio, will wrestle his final match in Columbus on Sunday (Jan. 21) as the Buckeyes celebrate Senior Day and welcome in No. 4 Iowa at 3:30 p.m. inside the Schottenstein Center.
