Watanabe to Compete in LPGA and Symetra Tour Qualifying

COLUMBUS, Ohio Rio Watanabe, a redshirt senior on the Ohio State women’s golf team, will be participating in LPGA and Symetra Tour Qualifying starting Thursday at Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage, Calif. The tournament is the first of three LPGA qualifying stages.

Watanabe, a second team All-Big Ten pick in 2015, is a three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection and a three-time OSU Scholar-Athlete. As a junior last season, the Kamagaya City, Japan, native competed in 30 rounds, contributing 14.5 scores to the team tally, in seven events. She completed five rounds under par.

The field will be cut following Saturday’s round. For the first three rounds, competitors will play one round each on the Palmer, Dinah Shore and Gary Player courses with the final round on the Dinah Shore course. All players who complete 54 holes will earn Symetra Tour status for the 2018 season.

The second stage will be played at the Plantation Golf and Country Club in Venice, Fla., Oct. 16-22.
