COLUMBUS, Ohio-Lori Walker, Ohio State women’s soccer head coach, officially begins her “summer job” this Saturday, April 13, when the Washington Freedom of the Women’s United Soccer Association takes on the New York Power in the season opener at RFK Stadium. Walker will provide color commentary for the Freedom for all locally-telecasted matches airing on Comcast SportsNet (Md).
The professional broadcasting gig is Walker’s second, as she served in the same capacity last season with the New York Power. Joining Walker in the booth is veteran soccer broadcaster Dave Johnson (play-by-play).
Walker, a 1994 graduate of the University of North Carolina, is entering her sixth year at the helm of women’s soccer. She led the Buckeyes to a 10-9-1 overall mark and a fourth-place finish in the Big Ten in 2001. A member of three national championship teams and three Atlantic Coast Conference championship teams while at UNC, Walker compiled an 86-1-5 (.962) record as a goalkeeper from 1988-91. She allowed 10 goals in 2,206 minutes of play to end her career in 1991 and still holds the NCAA Tournament record with an amazing 0.00 goals against average.
Comcast SportsNet will air a total of 11 Freedom games (six at home, five on the road) beginning with the opener this Saturday. For a complete 2002 schedule, visit www.washingtonfreedom.com.
