COLUMBUS, Ohio – The defending Big Ten co-champion and NCAA semifinalist Ohio State women’s soccer team announced the signing of nine members to the 2011 recruiting class Friday.

The class includes one forward, four midfielders, a midfielder/forward, a defender/midfielder and two defenders.

“Our 2011 class brings a variety of individual talents that add depth to each line and continue our tradition of hard-working Buckeyes,” head coach Lori Walker said. “Midfield speed and soccer aptitude were high priorities. I am very proud of the work my staff did to zero in on these qualities. We continue our tradition of bringing in players from Canada and California as well finding talented players with Buckeye family roots. The excellent club systems of Ohio Premier and Ohio Elite continue to feed our success. The resumes of each of these players are plastered with individual and team accolades.  Winning is in their blood, competition is engrained and work ethic and a strong training mentality are consistent expectations.” 

Meredith DeLong, Aubrey Fisher, Ashley Gruenbaum, Ellyn Gruber, Megan Scoliere and Chelsy Swackhamer all hail from Ohio. Madison Beckley comes to Buckeye state from California and Caroline Murray from Connecticut while Kiiri Kuld continues to build on the Ohio State pipeline from Canada.

M/F – Madison Beckley – Laguna Hills, Calif.
Slammers FC; Aliso Niguel High Shool

Beckley has four years of club experience with Slammers FC, the same team as former Buckeye All-American Ashley Bowyer … also played four years of soccer at Aliso Niguel High School, Bowyer’s alma mater … a member of U-16 national championship team in 2009 … named to the all-conference team and was the leading scorer her senior season at Aliso Niguel … also ran track and played lacrosse … enjoys surfing, dirt bike riding, snowboarding and traveling … daughter of Joele Watson and Scott Beckley … has five brothers and one sister.

Coach Lori Walker: “Madison comes from a long tradition of Buckeyes. She will add a different dimension to our team athletically. She can run, change direction, and jump will great precision and explosiveness. This enables her to be impactful in any line. She will be a real asset with her versatility especially on our set pieces.”

M – Meredith DeLong – Bexley, Ohio
Ohio Premier; Bexley High School

Meredith has extensive state ODP experience as a member of the OSYSA state championship team in 2008 and state finalist teams in 2009 and 2010 … four-year letterwinner at Bexley High School … Division II state champion at Bexley in 2009 … named second team all-Central District and first team Mid-State League in 2009 … enjoys traveling, running and playing the piano and violin … daughter of Edward and Carol DeLong.

Coach Lori Walker: “Meredith’s game can often times go unnoticed if you’re not watching closely. She is a very simple player but likes to be around the ball a lot. Her distribution and ability to keep the ball adds rhythm and flow to the game.”

D – Aubrey Fisher – Powell, Ohio
Ohio Premier; Olentangy Liberty High School

Aubrey has three years of club experience with Ohio Premier, a team that finished 10th in the country at the ECNL national tournament in 2010 … helped Eagles SC to State Cup in 2008 … three-year letterwinner at Olentangy Liberty … hobbies include playing basketball and the guitar, shopping and hanging out with friends … daughter of Gary and Christa Fisher … has two sisters, Steffany and Alexa and one brother, Grant.

Coach Lori Walker: “Aubrey is another solid defender in this class. She is a tremendous athlete and 1v1 defender, and her athletic ability and hard-working attitude will add depth to our back line.”

D – Ashley Gruenbaum – Milford Center, Ohio
Ohio Premier; Fairbanks High School

Ashley has four years of club experience with Ohio Premier … won the State Cup in 2007 with Ohio Premier and finished second in 2010 … member of ODP state team in 2007 and 2008, captaining the team in 2008 … part of 2007 and 2008 ODP regional pool … a four-year starter at Fairbanks … three-time all-Central District and two-time second team all-state … also played basketball at Fairbanks … enjoys coloring and listening to music … daughter of Heather and the late Stephen Gruenbaum … has a sister, Riley.

Coach Lori Walker: “Ash is quiet but fierce competitor. She is a shut-down defender with the athletic tools and soccer sense to be successful at this level. The accuracy of her long service will be a weapon in possession and on set pieces. She is the next generation of great Buckeye defenders.”

M – Ellyn Gruber – Cincinnati, Ohio
Ohio Elite; St. Ursula Academy

Ellyn was a captain of the 2010 Ohio Elite team won the State Cup and placed third at the ECNL national tournament … a four-year letterwinner at St. Ursula Academy, the 2007 and 2008 Division I state champions … two-time all-state and 2010 GGCL player of the year … named an NSCAA All-American after scoring 20 goals and adding 15 assists as a senior … enjoys playing basketball, watching football and going to the movies … daughter of Dan and Julie Gruber … has a sister, Abby, and a brother, Jack.

Coach Lori Walker: “Ellyn is a very gifted young player. Her knack for running at players 1v1 and scoring goals makes her a threatening attacker. Her athletic tools, fitness level and work rate will enable her to have a significant immediate impact.”

M – Kiiri Kuld – Toronto, Ontario
Erin Mills SC; Lawrence Park C.I.

Kiiri, joining Tiffany Cameron, Lauren Granberg and Danica Wu as the fourth Buckeye from Canada on the roster, helped Erin Mills Eagles win the 2010 U-18 Ontario Cup 4-1 in penalty kicks … the win sent the Eagles to the U-18 National Championships where they took second place … team was 2010 OYSL Champions with a 12-1-1 record … member of the 2010 U-17 Canadian World Cup roster … played for the Mississauga Falcons where she helped the team to a 2007 USA Cup Championship and a 2008 Disney Showcase Championship … played basketball and volleyball … hobbies include playing the guitar and piano, writing songs and reading … father, Heikki, played for the Estonian National basketball team and her mother, Ivi, was a member of the University of Toronto gymnastics team … has two siblings, Talvi and Mati.

Coach Lori Walker: “Kiiri is the quintessential soccer player. She displays excellent skill on the ball and makes timely decisions in possession and in the attack. Her commitment to fitness and hard work makes her a valuable part of our team equation next year.”

M – Caroline Murray – New Canaan, CT
South Central Premier; New Canaan High School

Caroline comes to the Buckeye state with plenty of ODP experience after playing for five years with the Connecticut ODP team … ESPN Rise second team All-American … Region 1 pool in 2006-07 and Region 1 semifinalist in 2010 … Connecticut State Cup finalist in 2009 … Four-time All-FCIAC honoree at New Canaan High School … received all-state honors in 2009 and 2010 while leading the Rams in scoring those same years … won championship game MVP en route to the 2009 Connecticut Class L State Championship … hobbies include running, drawing and playing tennis … brother, Chip, plays lacrosse at Dickinson College … daughter of Clark and Karen Murray.

Coach Lori Walker: “Caroline is a great addition to this class. She brings an excellent commitment to fitness and a solid skill set with the ball. She is busy and efficient as an attacker and in her defensive work, and we see her somewhere in our midfield. She continues the Murray family legacy steeped in Buckeye tradition.”

D/M – Megan Scoliere – Dublin, Ohio
Ohio Premier; Dublin Scioto High School

Megan will join her older sister, Danielle, on the pitch at Ohio State … member of the Ohio South ODP team for two years … member of Ohio Premier for 11 years … regional finalist and two-time state champion with Ohio Premier … all-time leading scorer and two-time team MVP at Dublin Scioto … three-year captain for the Irish … first team All-OCC, OCC Player of the Year, first team all-district, first team All-Ohio during senior year … daughter of Michael and Nancy Scoliere … also has a brother, Matthew.

Coach Lori Walker: “Megan is a versatile flank player. She has great experience at wide midfield and outside back and will add depth to both lines. She has strong athletic talent and a solid soccer foundation.”

F – Chelsy Swackhamer – Tipp City, Ohio
Ohio Premier; Bethel High School

Chelsy is another future Buckeye from Ohio Premier … team was 2010 Region 2 and state runners-up … comes to Ohio State with one year of ODP experience in which she was named to the 2009 all-district and all-state teams … named to All-District and All-State teams as a captain her senior year at Bethel High School … also ran cross country … she is the daughter of Tracey and Cindi Swackhamer … has an older sister, Ashley.

Coach Lori Walker: “Chelsy is a unique and dynamic forward with a real nose for the goal. She consistently puts herself in front of the net and uses a variety of ways to finish. She brings something different to our front line and we anticipate her being an opportunistic Big Ten goal scorer.”
