COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State (9-9 overall, 3-6 Big Ten) women’s volleyball team held a 2-1 lead against eight-ranked Minnesota (21-3, 8-1), but the Golden Gophers rallied to win the final two games to take a 3-2 (24-30, 30-22, 28-30, 30-24, 15-6) victory in St. John Arena Friday night. OSU’s Stacey Gordon (So., Oshawa, Ontario) scored a match-high 27 kills for Ohio State with teammate Suzie Stiling (Sr., Glenview, Ill.) adding 13. Cassie Busse (Jr., Prior Lake, Minn.) scored a team-high 21 kills for Minnesota with Trisha Bratford (So., Reseda, Calif.) adding 18, Erin Martin (So., Ames, Ia.) 12 and Jessica Brynes (Fr., Minnetonka, Minn.) 10.

Ohio State broke a six-all tie in game one with kills by Anna Andersson (Fr., Angelholm, Sweden) and Shelly Draeger (Sr., Milwaukee, Wis.) to take an 8-6 lead. The Buckeyes built an eight-point lead at 26-18 with a Stiling kill. Minnesota closed to within five at 28-23 and 29-24 before a Gordon kill ended the game at 30-24. Ohio State hit .382 for the game to .238 for Minnesota.

Game two saw six early ties before kills by Gordon and Andersson gave OSU an 8-6 lead. A Draeger kill made it a three-point lead at 11-8. Two Buckeye errors closed the margin to 11-10. After a service error by each squad, a Bratford block tied the game at 12. Kills by Byrnes and Busse and an OSU error and a block by Brafford and Busse gave Minnesota an 18-14 lead. The Golden Gophers built on the lead to a 30-22 win. The Gophers hit .200 for the game to .071 for Ohio State.

In game three Minnesota broke a seven-all tie with kills by Lisa Axel (Sr., Buffalo, Minn.), Bratford and Busse to take a 10-7 lead. A Draeger kill and a Gopher error cut the margin to 10-9. OSU’s Katie Virtue (Sr., St. Charles, Ill.) and Busse exchanged kill to move the score to 11-10, Minnesota. Bratford, with a kill, made it 12-10. A Stiling kill and a Minnesota error tied the game at 12. Following four ties, a Buckeye error and a Bratford kill put Minnesota ahead, 18-16. A Gordon kill, followed by a Byrnes kill and an OSU error made it 20-17. At 21-18, a Virtue kill, an Andersson-Stiling block and a Minnesota error tied the game at 21. After six more ties, the last at 28-all, a Gordon kill set game point at 29-28 and a Virtue-Stiling block ended the game at 30-28. The Buckeyes hit .389 for the game to .270 for Minnesota. Minnesota took a 7-6 lead in game four with a Lindsey Vander Well (So., Prinsburg, Minn.) solo block. The Golden Gophers maintained the lead but OSU remained close, trailing 23-22 before a Martin kill, a Bethany Brafford (Jr., Mansfield, Ohio) and Busse block, a Busse kill and an OSU error opened a 27-22 Minnesota lead. A block by Virtue and Stephanie Higgins (Fr., Biggsville, Ill.) made it 27-23. A Busse kill and a Buckeye error made it game point at 29-23. A Higgins kill made it 29-24 but a Brafford kill ended the game at 30-24. Minnesota hit .324 for the game to .231 for the Buckeyes.

Minnesota opened game five with a Martin kill and a block by Brafford and Busse for a 2-0 and never trailed in the game. The Gophers built up a 9-2 lead and finished off the game at 15-6. Minnesota hit .412 for the game to OSU’s -.056.

Minnesota out hit Ohio State, .276-.225 while the Buckeyes had a 74-69 advantage in kills. The Golden Gophers had a 6-3 advantage in ace serves while OSU gave up 15 service errors to nine for Minnesota. The Buckeyes had a 52-50 edge in digs with UM’s Paula Gentil (Fr., Fortaleza Ceara, Brazil) recording a match-high 20 for the Gophers. OSU’s Virtue had a team/season-high of 17. Minnesota controlled the net producing a 19-8 advantage in blocks. The Gophers had 10 solo blocks in the match with Vander Well recording a team-high four solo blocks. UM’s Brafford had a match-high eight blocks with three solos and five assists. OSU’s Virtue had a match-high 64 assists to 55 for Vander Well.

Ohio State will next host Iowa at 1 p.m., Sun., Oct. 27 in St. John Arena. The Hawkeyes (8-11, 2-7) lost in four games (30-24, 24-30, 24-30, 24-30) Friday night at Indiana (15-6, 4-5)

Ohio State notes:

The loss was OSU’s third five-game loss out of four Big Ten matches. OSU lost at #9 Penn State, at #22 Michigan State, won at Illinois and lost to #8 Minnesota at home

Anna Andersson return to action after missing eight matches with a knee sprain. She had a career-high nine kills against Minnesota.

Katie Virtue produced a season-high 64 assists for the third straight match (at Purdue, at Illinois). Virtue had a season-high 17 digs against Minnesota.

Stacey Gordon continued her consecutive streak of double-figure matches with 27 kills against Minnesota. She now has recorded double-figure kills in her last 34 matches. For her career, Gordon has double-figure kills in 47 of 49 matches and has 22 matches with 20 or more kills.
