COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State (10-9 overall, 4-6 Big Ten) women’s volleyball team, with a 3-1 (31-29, 34-32, 30-18, 30-17) win over Iowa (8-12, 2-8), finished out the first half of the Big Ten schedule Sunday afternoon in St. John Arena. Buckeye seniors Suzie Stiling (Glenview, Ill.) and Shelly Draeger (Milwaukee, Wis.) recorded match-highs of 18 kills each against the Hawkeyes. OSU’s Stacey Gordon (So., Oshawa, Ontario) added 17 kills and Stephanie Higgins (Fr., Biggsville, Ill.) 12 for the Buckeyes. Iowa’s Laura Simpson (So., Sassafras, Australia) scored a team-high 16 kills for the Hawkeyes with Echaka Agba (Fr., LaPorte, Ind.) adding 13.

With game one tied at nine, two kills each from Higgins and Gordon opened a 13-9 Ohio State lead. After an Iowa time out, a two Hawkeye errors made it 15-9. OSU had a 19-16 lead when a kill by Renee Hill (Jr., Spring, TX), a block by Jitka Stehnova (Jr., Odolena Voda, Czech Republic) and Abby Tjaden (Jr., Eldora, Iowa) and an OSU error tied the game at 19. A solo block by Tjaden gave Iowa the lead at 20-19. Stiling tied the game at 20 with a kill. Iowa, with a kill and ace serve by Hill, took a 22-20 lead. A Higgins kill and Hawkeye error tied the game at 22. The teams exchange points to a 28-28 score. A Buckeye error gave Iowa game point at 29-28. Gordon tied the game at 29 stopping the game point. Two Iowa errors ended the game at 31-29, OSU. The Buckeyes hit .174 for the game to .050 for Iowa.

The Buckeyes had five-point leads at 18-13 and 23-18 in game two. At 25-21, Ohio State, a Simpson kill, a block by Tjaden-Stehnova and a Buckeye error cut the lead to one at 25-24. An Iowa error made it 26-24, OSU. A Tjaden kill and an ace serve by Hill tied the game at 26. An Iowa block by Agba and Tjaden put the Hawkeyes ahead, 27-26. A Draeger kill tied the game at 27. An Agba kill and a Hawkeye error made it 28-all. Iowa reached game point at 29-28 with a Stehnova kill. A Stiling kill held off the game point, tying the game at 29. Agba, with a kill, set game point two at 30-29. Iowa gave up the service error to tie the game at 30. A service error for each team moved the score to 31-all. An Iowa block by Tjaden and Simpson put the Hawkeyes ahead at 32-31 for game point four. A Gordon kill tied the game at 32. Hill’s kill made it 33-32 and with Iowa’s fifth game point attempt, an OSU error, won the game, 34-32. The Hawkeyes hit .176 for the game to .159 for Ohio State. Ohio State held an early 8-6 lead in game three, but a Pam Kavadas (So., Roselle, Ill.) kill, an OSU error and a block by Tjaden and Simpson gave Iowa a 9-8 lead. A Simpson kill and an OSU error opened the Hawkeye lead to three at 11-8. OSU cut the margin to 11-9 with a block by Katie Virtue (Sr., St. Charles, Ill.), Higgins and Gordon on a Hill attempt. On the attempt, Hill fell to the floor and had to be carried off the floor with an injury. A Higgins-Draeger block cut the lead to one at 11-10. An Evelena Ornelas (Jr., Davenport, Iowa) kill made it 12-10. A Gordon kill and a block by Higgins and Anna Andersson (Fr., Angelholm, Sweden) tied the game at 12. At 19-all, two Iowa errors made it 21-19, OSU. An OSU error and an Agba kill tied the game at 21. Kills by Andersson, Gordon and Draeger gave Ohio State a 24-21 lead. With the Buckeyes leading 28-25, a Higgins kill set game point at 29-25. Iowa stopped three game points with an Amoreena Reynolds (So., Roseville, Minn.) and Simpson block, an Ornelas kill and an ace by Reynolds to cut the Buckeye lead to 29-28. An Iowa error ended the game at 30-28 for OSU. The Buckeyes hit .200 for the game to .093 for Iowa.

The Buckeyes scored the first five points of game four with three kills by Draeger, a block by Higgins and Andersson and an ace serve from Gordon. Leading 9-4, an ace serve by Heather Whalen (Jr., Kalamazoo, Mich.) and a Virtue kill pushed the lead to seven at 11-4. At 14-9, kills by Higgins and Stiling and an Iowa error made the lead eight at 17-9. A Stiling-Virtue block made it a nine-point lead at 19-10. At 21-12, an Iowa error and blocks by Virtue and Higgins and Gordon and Higgins made it 24-12. A Reynolds kill cut the margin to 24-13. A Hawkeye error and kills by Higgins, Draeger and Gordon made it 28-13. Iowa made it 28-14 with a Simpson kill. A Draeger kill gave the Buckeyes match point at 29-14. Two OSU errors and a block by Tjaden and Suzanne Bouchard (Sr., Albuquerque, NM) stopped three match points, but an Andersson kill ended the game for the fourth match point at 30-17. The Buckeyes hit .500 for the game to .063 for Iowa.

For the match Ohio State hit .235 to .102 for Iowa. The Buckeyes had a 71-54 margin in kills. The Hawkeyes had a 5-3 advantage in ace serves while OSU gave up 13 service error to 11 for Iowa. Ohio State had a 67-52 margin in digs with Iowa’s Kavadas recording a match-high 14. OSU’s Virtue and Gordon had 13 digs each with Rebecca Kastein (Fr., Mt. Lebanon, Pa.) adding 12. OSU edged the Hawkeyes in blocks, 12-11. Iowa’s Tjaden recorded a match-high eight blocks with one solo and seven assists. OSU’s Higgins had a team-high seven assist blocks with Virtue adding six. Virtue posted 63 assists in the match to 46 for Stehnova for Iowa.

The Buckeyes begin the second half of the Big Ten schedule with road matches at Northwestern at Wisconsin next week. OSU faces the Wildcats of Northwestern at 7 p.m., Fri., Nov. 1 in Evanston. The Buckeyes then travel to face the Badgers of Wisconsin at 7 p.m., Sat., Nov. 2 in Madison. ESPN2 will broadcast the Wisconsin match on Sun., Nov. 3 at 4 p.m. EST.

Ohio State Notes:

Suzie Stiling equaled her season-high of 18 kills against Iowa. She had 18 kills at Illinois. Her 31 kills on the weekend, gives her 1,228 for her career and moves her to ninth on the OSU career list. She passed Tricia Stragliotto (1993-95) with 1,211 kills and Rosie Snow (1996-99) with 1,227. She also had a solo and seven assist blocks on the weekend to raise her career total blocks to 389 (57 solo, 332 assists) and move into a tie with Jenny Jackson (1992-95) (67-322) for fourth on the OSU career list. Stiling passed Leisa Wissler (1988-91) and Sherri Rinker (1984-87) who share fifth place with 285 total blocks.

Anna Andersson had a career-high three blocks (1 solo, 2 assists) against Iowa.

Katie Virtue recorded a season-high six assist blocks against Iowa. Her previous high this season was five (twice), the last against Northwestern.

Stephanie Higgins equaled her season-high of seven assist blocks against Iowa. She previously had seven assists in two matches, the last at Michigan State.

Rebecca Kastein had 12 digs against Iowa for her fourth match with double-figure digs, including her last three.

Stacey Gordon continued her consecutive streak of double-figure kill matches with 17 against Iowa. She now has recorded double-figure kills in her last 35 matches. For her career, Gordon has double-figure kills in 48 of 50 matches and has 22 matches with 20 or more kills. Defensively, Gordon has 32 matches with double-figure digs in her career (13 this season). She has had 31 double-doubles (kills-digs) in her career (13 this season).
