COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State (21-10 overall) women’s volleyball team, behind an outstanding performance by Stacey Gordon (So., Oshawa, Ontario) defeated Louisville (28-6) 3-0 (30-26, 30-28, 30-24) to advance to the Pacific regional semifinals next week at a site to be announced. Gordon produced a match-high 29 kills, while hitting .521 in the three-game match. She added seven digs and an ace serve in the contest. OSU’s Shelly Draeger (Sr., Milwaukee, Wis.) contributed 11 kills (.625) and a match-high 11 digs for the Buckeyes. Louisville’s Bing Sun (So., Beijing, China) had a team-high 19 kills (.421) for the Cardinals.

After seven early ties in game one, the Buckeyes broke a 10-all tie with a five-point run. Two Louisville errors began the run followed by an ace serve by Stephanie Higgins (Fr., Biggsville, Ill.). A Suzie Stiling (Sr., Glenview, Ill.) and Anna Andersson (Fr., Angelholm, Sweden) block and a Cardinal put the score at 15-10, OSU. Leading 16-12, Louisville responded with a four-point run off three Buckeye errors and a Jennifer Craven (Fr., Louisville, Ky.) kill to cut the lead to 16-15. Louisville tied the game at 19 off a Buckeye error and had ties at 21 and 23. Katie Virtue (Sr., St. Charles, Ill.), with a kill, gave Ohio State a 24-23 lead. Stiling’s solo block made it 25-23. Gordon made it 26-23 with a kill as Louisville called time out. Sun stopped the run with a kill at 26-24. Gordon, with back-to-back kills moved the score to 28-24. Sun countered with a kill at 28-25. Higgins set game point with a kill at 29-25. Sun stopped the point with a kill at 29-26. Gordon’s ninth kill of the game closed it out at 30-26. Ohio State hit .390 for the game to .250 for Louisville.

Ohio State held the early lead in game one, 11-6. A Craven kill and an ace serve by Lena Ustymenko (Fr., Kiev, Ukraine) cut the margin to 11-8. A Louisville error made it 12-8. A Sun kill and an OSU error made it 12-10. A Louisville error and a Sun kill made it 13-11. At 14-12, a Draeger kill and a Cardinal error made it 16-12. An OSU error and kills by Sun and Ustymenko cut the Buckeye lead to 16-15. A kill and ace serve by Andersson made it 18-15. A Buckeye error and an ace serve by Benny Flynn (Jr., Louisville, Ky.) made it 18-17. Kills by Gordon and Sun made it 19-18. A Cardinal block by Sun and Stacey Mercer (Sr., Louisville, Ky.) tied the game at 19. OSU responded with kills from Higgins, Gordon and Higgins again as Louisville called time out with Ohio State leading 22-19. Sun and Gordon again exchanged kills to make it 23-20. Sun’s kill and an Anastasia Zaitseva (Jr., Moscow, Russia)-Flynn block cut the lead to 23-22. A Louisville error and a Sun kill made it 24-23. A Draeger kill and a Ustymenko-Flynn block made it 25-24. Ustymenko, with a kill, tied the game at 25. Kills from Stiling and Gordon put OSU ahead, 27-25. Flynn countered with a kill at 27-26. Gordon and Mercer exchanged kills at 28-27. Gordon, with a kill, set game point at 29-27. Sun responded with a kill at 29-28. Gordon’s 11th kill of the game made it 30-28 for Ohio State. OSU hit .417 for the game to .324 for Louisville. OSU’s Gordon had 11 kills in 14 attempts for a .786 hitting percentage.

From one-all in game three, Louisville took a 3-1 lead off two OSU errors. A Cardinal error made it 3-2. With Louisville ahead, 10-8, kills by Gordon and Draeger and a Gordon ace serve put Ohio State ahead, 11-10. A Buckeye error tied the game at 11. At 16-all, a Cardinal error and an ace serve by Stiling made it 18-16, OSU. Sun and Gordon exchanged kills at 19-17. Kills by Ustymenko and Draeger made it 20-18. Ustymenko and Draeger made it 21-19 with kills. A Mercer kill cut the lead to 21-20. With kills from Stiling and Virtue, OSU took a 23-20 lead as Louisville called time out. Sun and Gordon produced kill to make it 24-21. A Sun-Mercer block made it 24-22. Gordon and Sun added kills to make it 25-23. Back-to-back kills by Gordon made it 27-23 as Louisville called time out. Gordon’s third straight kill made it 28-23 and a Draeger kill set match point at 29-23. Louisville’s Flynn stopped the point with a kill at 29-24, but Gordon’s 29th kill of the match ended the game at 30-24. The Buckeyes hit .513 for the game to .350 for Louisville.

Ohio State hit .440 for the match to .307 for Louisville. The Buckeyes had a 62-50 margin in kills and had a 5-3 advantage in ace serves. The Buckeyes gave up 12 service errors to eight for the Cardinals. OSU had a 42-31 margin in digs with Buckeye Draeger recording a match-high 11 and OSU’s Rebecca Kastein (Fr., Mt. Lebanon, Pa.) adding 10. Louisville had a 7-6 advantage in blocks with OSU’s Stiling (1 solo, 3 assists) and Louisville’s Flynn (4 assists) sharing match-high honors.
