COLUMBUS, Ohio-Vince Ng, a senior on the Ohio State men’s tennis team, upset No. 2 seed Eleazar Magallan of Florida, 6-4, 6-2, in the qualifying round of the ITA All-American Championships in Chattanooga, Tenn. After advancing out of a grueling pre-qualifying draw, Ng went on to surpass Magallan and will play Henrik Soderberg of SMU Wednesday at 9 a.m. in the qualifying round.

Ng was undefeated in the pre-qualifying bracket. In the first round, he came out ahead of Florida State’s Chip Webb, 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (2). Ng went on to claim the second round against Jason Smit of Illinois State, 5-7, 6-3, 6-3, and in the third, defeated Daniel Jung. Ng then went on to advance out of the bracket, as he defeated Duke’s Ryan Heinberg, 6-7, 7-5, 6-1.

The rest of the Buckeyes advanced no further than the second round in the 128-player singles pre-qualifying draw.

OSU junior Brenton Contini defeated Coppin State’s Patrick Phillips, 6-0, 6-0, in the first round. Contini then lost in the second round to Patrick Chucri of Mississippi, 2-6, 6-0, 6-4. Sophomore Kevin McLean lost to Dino Mancarella of UAB in the first round, 6-3, 6-4, and freshman Scott Green lost to Oregon’s Sven Swinnen, 6-2, 6-4.

In the 128-team doubles draw, the duo of McLean and Ng defeated UC Santa Barbara’s Carlos Palencia and Mirco Schwindt, 8-5, in the first round. In the second round, they lost to Roger Gubser and Drew Hoskins of Texas, 8-2. Contini and Green lost, 8-1, in the first round of the doubles draw to the Florida duo of Janne Holmia and Trey Johnson.

The ITA Men’s All-American Championships are the first and largest single tournament of the 2002-03 collegiate tennis season.
