COLUMBUS, Ohio – Junior goaltender Erika Vanderveer and freshman defenseman Kelly Cahill received WCHA Defensive and Rookie of the Week honors, respectively, for the week of Oct. 10. This is the third such honor for Vanderveer and first for Cahill. The Buckeyes swept WCHA foe St. Cloud State by scores of 2-1 and 5-1 to open their 2005-06 season Oct. 7-8.

Vanderveer (Bradford, Ontario/Mississauga Jr. Chiefs) stopped 49 of 51 shots faced in the series, with 28 saves Friday and 21 on Saturday to backstop the Buckeyes to a sweep of St. Cloud State. She allowed just one goal in each game for a 1.00 GAA and .961 save percentage to open the season. Vanderveer also helped the Ohio State penalty kill go a perfect 7-for-7 on the weekend as she stopped nine power-play shots.

Cahill (Farmington Hills, Mich./Honeybaked) not only helped the Ohio State defense limit St. Cloud State to only two goals on the weekend, but contributed offensively as well, leading the team with four points in the series. She assisted fellow freshman Morgan Marziali on the opening goal of the season Friday night. Cahill then scored the first and fifth goals in Ohio State’s 5-1 win on Saturday while assisting on the fourth goal of the game.

Both players look to help the Buckeyes continue their winning streak when they travel to Boston, Mass., to face the Huskies of Northeastern in a two-game series Oct. 14-15. Game times are 7 p.m. Friday and 4 p.m. Saturday.
