COLUMBUS, Ohio – Senior goaltender Erika Vanderveer stopped all 29 shots faced to lead the Ohio State women’s hockey team to a 2-0 victory over Connecticut Saturday at OSU Ice Rink. The win completed the sweep of the Huskies for OSU and extended its win streak to three games. The Buckeyes improve to 5-5-0 (1-5-0 WCHA) while Connecticut falls to 7-3-0 (4-0-0 Hockey East).

For Vanderveer (Bradford, Ontario/Mississauga Jr. Chiefs), it was her first shutout of the season and seventh of her career. She only allowed one goal on the weekend with 63 saves to improve to 4-2-0 this season with a .949 save percentage and 1.70 goals-against-average.

After a scoreless first period in which the Huskies had a 10-9 edge in shots, the Buckeyes got on the board just 1:25 into the second period on a goal by junior Jody Heywood (Regina, Saskatchewan/Regina Cougars). Heywood charged toward the UConn net and flicked in the puck for her second goal on the year. Fellow junior Erin Keys (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall) and senior Amber Bowman (Innisfil, Ontario/Beatrice Jr. Aeros) both picked up their eighth assists of the season on the goal.

Ohio State increased its lead to 2-0 at 8:18 when sophomore Hayley Klassen (Warman, Saskatchewan/College of Notre Dame) scored her third goal of the season during a scramble in front of the net. While on the power play, freshman Rachel Davis (Horton, Mich./Honeybaked) fired the puck toward the net for the first assist while Shelby Aldous (LaSalle, Ontario/Windsor Wildcats) picked up the second assist, her third of the series. The Buckeyes took their 2-0 lead into the second intermission with a 21-16 advantage in shots.

Vanderveer stopped all 13 shots faced in the third period to preserve the shutout. The Huskies pulled goaltender Brittany Wilson for the final 1:37 put were unable to get anything past Vanderveer even with the extra skater.

Overall, Ohio State had 27 shots while UConn totaled 29. The Buckeyes were 1-for-4 on the power play while holding the Huskies 0-for-5 with the man-advantage.

The Buckeyes look to continue their win streak next weekend when they travel to Bemidji State for a WCHA series Nov. 10-11. Games begin at 2:07 p.m. (CT) both Friday and Saturday.
