COLUMBUS, Ohio – After winning the national parallel bars title Friday at the Visa Championships, Ohio State sophomore DJ Bucher was named to the U.S. Men’s Gymnastics Senior National Team. In addition, former Buckeye Raj Bhavsar, who was unable to compete at the championships because of injury, successfully petitioned onto the national team.

Bucher (Mason, Ohio), Bhavsar and Randy Monahan (Elizabethtown, Pa.), who finished sixth on rings and high bar at the national event and completed his eligibility in 2005, were invited to the World Championship Team Trials, to be held Oct. 12-18 in Colorado Springs at the Olympic Training Center. The World Championships will be held Nov. 21-27 in Melbourne, Australia.

At the U.S. championships, Buckeye head coach Miles Avery was voted by his peers as the USA Gymnastics Coach of the Year. Former Buckeye Blaine Wilson, who retired last week, was voted the Athlete of the Year. Paul Hamm, the 2004 Olympic all-around gold medal winner who trains with Avery in Columbus, was selected as the Sportsperson of the Year. Both Wilson and Hamm’s awards were voted on by their fellow gymnasts.
