COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Featuring some of college basketball’s top returning stars, 16 finalists for the 2005 USA Basketball Women’s World University Games Team will convene Thursday in Colorado Springs, Colo., for team training July 28-Aug. 4. The 16 finalists are competing for a spot on the 12-member USA World University Games Team roster. The 2005 World University Games women’s basketball competition is being held Aug. 10-19 in Izmir, Turkey.

The U.S. finalists gets on the court for the first time Thursday at 4:00 p.m. (MDT, all times local) at the U.S. Olympic Training Center Sports Center II. Returning to the floor twice a day July 29 – Aug. 4, the USA will practice at 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., with practices alternating between Colorado College’s J. Juan Reid Gymnasium and Sports Center II. The finalists will practice at Colorado College July 29, July 31 and Aug. 2 and at Sports Center II on July 30, Aug. 1 and Aug. 3-4. After completing its last U.S. training sessions on Aug. 4, the USA official 12-member team will travel to Izmir, Turkey, on Aug. 5. The team will continue to train in Turkey Aug. 6-9 prior to the first game at the 2005 World University Games on Aug. 10.

The finalists, who were selected by the USA Basketball Women’s Collegiate Committee following the May 19-21 Trials, are: Seimone Augustus (LSU / Baton Rouge, La.); Alison Bales (Duke / Dayton, Ohio); Monique Currie (Duke / Washington, D.C.); Jessica Davenport (Ohio State / Columbus, Ohio); Megan Duffy (Notre Dame / Dayton, Ohio); Candice Dupree (Temple / Tampa, Fla.); Sylvia Fowles (LSU / Miami, Fla.); Erin Grant (Texas Tech / Arlington, Texas); Brandie Hoskins (Ohio State / Dayton, Ohio); Ivory Latta (North Carolina / McConnells, S.C.); Shawntinice Polk (Arizona / Hanford, Calif.); Cappie Pondexter (Rutgers / Chicago, Ill.); Leah Rush (Oklahoma / Amarillo, Texas); Liz Shimek (Michigan State / Empire, Mich.); Brooke Smith (Stanford / San Anselmo, Calif.) and Lisa Willis (UCLA / Long Beach, Calif.). Kathy Delaney-Smith, head coach of Harvard University (Mass.), is serving as head coach for the 2005 USA Basketball World University Games Team and collegiate head coaches Pokey Chatman of Louisiana State University and Cathy Inglese of Boston College (Mass.) are assisting Delaney-Smith.
