Laura McIntosh has goal and assist in Canadian U-22 debut
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Preliminary round action began Tuesday in the 2011 MLP Cup in Kreuzlingen, Switzerland, and junior forward Laura McIntosh started the tournament with a bang. The Waterloo, Ontario, native had a goal and assist in her first appearance with the Canadian Under-22 Team in a 5-0 victory over the hosting Swiss team.
McIntosh, an assistant captain who leads the Buckeyes with 31 points, set up the opening goal and scored the final one in the victory. Fellow junior forward and assistant captain Natalie Spooner is playing in her third MLP Cup and finished with six shots in the contest. Canada has won the MLP Cup seven times, including every year from 2003-08 and in 2010.
Also playing Tuesday was freshman defenseman Annie Svedin on the Swedish National Team. The Swedes fell to rival Finland, 4-3, in a shootout, and Svedin was even in the game with one shot on goal.
All three Buckeyes will conclude their preliminary-round action Thursday when Sweden faces Russia and Canada takes on Germany. The tournament continues with playoffs Friday and medal games Saturday.
