COLUMBUS, Ohio – Former Buckeyes Margot Shumway and Wilma Dressel will be competing at the 2005 FISA World Rowing Championships Aug. 28-Sept. 4 in Gifu, Japan. Shumway was one of 63 named to the U.S. Women’s National Team roster. Dressel will be representing her home country of Germany.
“I was excited to be named to the team, but we have a lot of work to do,” Shumway said. “This is something I have been working really hard for and I feel honored, proud and privileged.
Shumway, a native of Westlake, Ohio, will be competing in the women’s quadruple sculls (W4x), along with Caryn Davies (Ithaca, N.Y.), Anna Michelson (Bellevue, Wash.) and Kelly Salchow (Cincinnati, Ohio).
“We are currently training on Lake Carnegie in Princeton (N.J.) and we leave for Japan Aug. 20,” Shumway said. “Our goal is to represent the United States, to do our best and bring home a medal.”
In total, 19 crews will represent the United States competing in the men’s single sculls, women’s single sculls, lightweight women’s single sculls, men’s double sculls, women’s double sculls, lightweight men’s double sculls, lightweight women’s double sculls, men’s quadruple sculls, women’s quadruple sculls, lightweight men’s quadruple sculls, lightweight women’s quadruple sculls, men’s pair, women’s pair, men’s pair with coxswain, men’s four, lightweight men’s four, men’s four with coxswain, men’s eight and women’s eight.
Shumway was a letterwinner at Ohio State in 2001 and 2002 and a member of the first varsity four that placed fourth at the 2001 NCAA Championships.
Dressel, a native of Dortmund, Germany, will be racing in the straight four (4-), along with Kerstin Naumann (Dresden, Germany), Christiane Hölzel (Leipzig, Germany) and Mandy Emmrich (Dresden, Germany).
Dressel was a letterwinner at Ohio State in 2004 and a member of the first varsity eight that placed fifth at the 2004 NCAA Championships.
