COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s lacrosse team continued its outstanding achievements in the classroom as two student-athletes, Mary Kate Facchina and Jennifer Porretto, were named to the 2014 Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Academic Honor Roll for sustaining at least a 3.50 cumulative grade-point-average.
The IWLCA honored 233 student-athletes overall from 79 different institutions. All student-athletes were nominated by their schools and have achieved at least junior status academically.
The Buckeyes also were named to the IWLCA team academic honor roll for having an overall GPA of at least 3.0.
Facchina, a senior midfielder, totaled a career-high 38 points last season as a junior. She was tied for second with 32 goals, was second with 26 ground balls and was third with 13 caused turnovers. Facchina is an Ohio State scholar-athlete majoring in Early Childhood Education.
Porretto, also a senior midfielder, started all 20 games last season. She was fourth on the team with 39 points (30 goals, 9 assists) and was third with 28 ground balls. She also is an Ohio State scholar-athlete majoring in Sport Industry.
The Buckeyes, who are returning 9 of 12 starters, finished 13-7 overall and 4-2 in ALC play in 2014, and earned their first NCAA Tournament appearance in 11 years under fourth-year head coach Alexis Venechanos. The 13 wins were the second most in school history while the No. 13 final national ranking marked the second-best finish in school history in a national poll.
