COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State junior outfielder Troy Montgomery has been named a 2016 preseason third team All-American, the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association announced Tuesday. Montgomery joins Michigan utility player Carmen Benedetti, Maryland pitcher Mike Shawaryn and Minnesota utility player Matt Fielder as Big Ten standouts on the list.

The Buckeye centerfielder had a breakout year in 2015, batting .317 with 54 runs scored, 12 doubles, six triples, four home runs and a conference-best 35 stolen bases, which tied the OSU single-season record.

“Troy probably had as good of a fall as I’ve ever coached,” sixth-year head coach Greg Beals said. “Coming off a tremendous spring, he took the summer off and put on 12 pounds in the weight room so there is going to be some punch in his bat. He’s also a superb defensive player and can really throw and go get the ball.”

Montgomery, a native of Fortville, Ind., was a second team All-Big Ten selection as a sophomore and was the “catalyst” of the OSU lineup as the team’s lead-off hitter. Defensively, Montgomery did not commit an error in 55 starts. This is Montgomery’s third preseason honor after being named to the all-conference list by Perfect Game and Top 300 College Players List by D1Baseball.
