COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s and women’s track and field teams finished strong Saturday, day two of the 2002 All-Ohio Championships hosted by Ohio State. The event was held at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.

The men’s team finished competition with 177 points to win the meet. Kent State placed second with 139 points while Akron was third with 100.5 points. Ohio State won seven individual events, including two by sophomore thrower Dan Taylor (Middlefield, Ohio/Berkshire).

Taylor had a first-place distance of 18.75 meters in the shot put and 53.84 in the discus throw. Justin Cavinee (Sr., West Jefferson, Ohio/West Jefferson) won the hammer toss with a distance of 61.12 meters. In other field events, John Ferguson set a personal best in the javelin thrown a his launch of 64.76 meters while Nosa Ehimwenman (So., Flossmoor, Ill./Homewood Flossmoor) captured first place in the triple jump with a distance of 15.46 meters.

Derrick Butler (Jr., Cincinnati, Ohio/ LeSalle) crossed the finish line in 30:30.05 to win the 10,000 meter run while Todd Helber finished first in the 800 meter run in 1:52.36.

The women’s team compiled 102 points, to tie for second place with Akron. The Kent State Golden Flashes won the meet with 133 points. The Buckeyes garnered three first-place finishes, all field events.

Ohio State senior Tami Smith (Jr., Galloway, Ohio/Westland) finished first in the high jump, leaping a distance of 1.77 meters. Rosalind Goodwin (Fr., Prospect, Ky./Louisville Ballard) captured the triple jump event with a first-place jump of 12.13 meters while teammate Krista Keir (Jr., Westerville, Ohio/Westerville) set a school record in the discus with her toss of 182-4 (55.57). The throw earned her a NCAA automatic bid to the 2002 NCAA Outdoor Championships and is currently the NCAA yearly leader in the discus.
