COLUMBUS, Ohio – Nearly 5,000 miles away from home on his first international trip on Saturday, rising senior Nathan Tomasello did what he does best: win. The Parma, Ohio native claimed gold at 57kg in the Ion Cornianu & Ladislau Simon 2017.
Tomasello, who in June made his first U.S. National Team with a second-place showing at the World Team Trials in Lincoln, Neb., went 4-0 on the day and had little trouble in making the finals, averaging 10.3 points in the first three matches with 12-2, 11-5 and 8-1 victories. His victory in the finals was over Nikolai Okhlopkov of Russia. In the quarterfinals, he knocked off Ivan Guydia of Romania, a 2016 Olympic qualifier.
A three-time All-American and just the third three-time Big Ten champion in school history, Tomasello went 4-1 at the World Team Trials – including a 8-2 decision over Tyler Graff in the true second-place match – to earn his spot on the United States National Team. He enters his senior season with the Buckeyes with 84 wins over the last three years and 69 victories in the last 71 matches.
