Three members of the Ohio State women’s swimming team will represent their home countries at the 2006 Fina World Swimming Championships for short-course meters in Shanghai, China, Wednesday through Sunday. Griet Buelens, Gulsah Gunenc and Elaine Chan will compete on behalf of Belgium, Turkey and China, respectively.

Buelens (So., Kapelle, Belgium/Ursulinen Mechelen) will be competing in three events, the most of the three Buckeyes. She will compete in both the 200- and 400-meter freestyle events and the 200-meter butterfly. Buelens broke the Belgian national record in the 200-meter butterfly in 2005 at the Belgian national championships. Her record time (2:11.55) broke the previous record by two seconds.

Gunenc (Jr., Edirne, Turkey/Edirne Anatolian) and Buelens will meet in the 200-meter butterfly. Gunenc is Turkey’s record-holder in the event, notching a time of 2:12.86 at the 2005 European Short Course Championships. Gunenc will be competing in the 100-meter butterfly, as well.

Chan (Fr., Hong Kong, China) will return to her home country to compete at the championships. She will be competing in the 50-meter freestyle. She also has the possibility of competing in the 100-meter freestyle event and a relay.
