WEST POINT, N.Y. – Three members of the Ohio State men’s gymnastics team earned seven of a possible nine All-America honors at the 2005 NCAA Individual Event Championships Saturday evening at the Holleder Center in West Point, N.Y. Ronald Ferris became the first national high bar champion in Ohio State history and senior Randy Monahan concluded his OSU gymnastics career with seven All-America accolades, including three from the 2005 championships.
The Top 10 competitors from the team and all-around championships advanced to the individual finals, where the Top 8 participants from each event earned All-America laurels.
Monahan (Sr., Elizabethtown, Pa./Central Pa. Academy of Gym.) was the lone finalist on floor for Ohio State and tallied a fifth-place 9.362. Two Buckeyes represented OSU on pommel horse with Ferris (Jr., Austintown, Ohio/Ohio Gym. Institute) earning the first of two honors and DJ Bucher (Mason, Ohio/Queen City Gym.) claiming his first All-America award. Ferris recorded a 9.5 for sixth place, while Bucher notched a 9.212 for seventh. On rings Bucher and Monahan scored a 9.562 and 9.5 to finish tied for fifth and ninth, respectively. Recording a 9.637 on parallel bars, Bucher finished second and captured his third honor overall. The Mason, Ohio native became the first freshman in OSU history to earn All-America honors on all three qualified events. Ferris, who also was the 2005 Big Ten High Bar Champion, scored a 9.762 to place first and Monahan and Willie Ito (So., Huntington Beach, Calif./South Coast Gym.) followed with a score of 9.362 for seventh and 8.9 for ninth.
Prior to the event finals, Ohio State recorded a 225.450 to finish second in the team and all-around championships Friday night. The Buckeyes fell .225 points short behind champion Oklahoma’s 225.675. Monahan tied his personal best of 56.55 in the all-around to finish second. ESPN2 will televise the team and all-around championships on tape delay at 2 p.m. EDT April 13.
