RELATED INFO

ANN ARBOR, Mich. The ITA Midwest Regional Championships have grown accustomed to seeing Buckeyes in the final matches, and this year will be no different.

In singles, freshman Mikael Torpegaard used the momentum from the early rounds to push through to the finals, taking down both the No. 6 and 13 seeds on Sunday. Both matches were three-set thrillers, beginning with a morning bout against the 6th seeded Sam Shropshire of Northwestern. Torpegaard won the first set 6-4 and dropped the second 3-6 before dominating the third set, winning 6-2 to move out of the quarterfinals.

The semifinal match was eerily similar to the previous match, as he won the first set 6-4, dropped the second 3-6, and then dominated the final set, winning 6-3 against the 13th-seeded Aron Hiltzik of Illinois to advance to the finals. Torpegaard will face Aron’s brother Jared Hiltzik, the top seed in the tournament, of Illinois in the singles championship at 9 a.m.

Sophomore Ralf Steinbach was one match away from meeting his teammate in the singles final, as he began the day with a straight set victory over 5th-seeded Alex Petrone of host Michigan to advance to the semifinals. Steinbach then lost a hard-fought battle to top-seeded Jared Hiltzik 7-6(5), 6-3.

Steinbach’s day did not end with singles, however, as he and doubles partner Kevin Metka upheld Ohio State’s tradition of doubles dominance, winning both matches to advance to the doubles championship. The top-seeded duo began the day with a victory over Harry Jadun and John Patrick Mullane of Michigan State in a tiebreaker, 8-7 (6). The format then switched for the semifinals, as the pair won in straight sets over #53 Jeffrey Schorsch and Charlie Emhardt of Valparaiso 6-4, 6-5 to advance to the finals. They will face Notre Dame’s Eddy Covalschi and Josh Hagar Monday morning at 9 a.m.

Torpegaard will look to make it five-straight and eight of the last 10 tournament singles titles for the Buckeyes, while Steinbach and Metka will look to add another doubles title to the history books. A win tomorrow would give the Buckeyes four doubles titles in the last five years, and it would be the second-straight title for Metka.
