COLUMBUS, Ohio – Three members of the Big Ten Champion men’s soccer team earned NCAA Division I All-Ohio honors, the Ohio Collegiate Soccer Association announced last week. Doug Verhoff and Konrad Warzycha each were tabbed first-team honorees, while Matt Gold was recognized as a member of the second team.

In addition, Verhoff and Gold garnered First Team Academic All-Ohio accolades for their respective performances in the classroom.

Verhoff, who was recently named the team’s Most Valuable Player, wrapped up the 2009 campaign as the Big Ten co-Defensive Player of the Year, in addition to a First Team All-Big Ten selection. Along with fellow senior Andrew Magill, Verhoff wrapped up his career with the Buckeyes as the leader of the second winningest class in program history with 49 wins. The defensive MVP of the Big Ten Tournament, Verhoff anchored the defense that allowed the fewest goals in the Big Ten (16) all season.

The exercise science major from Dublin, Ohio, is slated to graduate in the spring. He also was a three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection and 2007 CoSIDA Academic all-district and an Academic All-America nominee.

Joining Verhoff on the All-Ohio team is Warzycha, a junior midfielder. He finished tied for third on the team in scoring with two goals and four assists. Both goals stood as game-winners, capturing the regular-season meeting with Penn State Oct. 18 and the Big Ten semifinal over Indiana Nov. 13. The Dublin, Ohio, native started in 20 games this season and in 40 of the last 41 over the last two years.

Earning second-team honors and the Academic All-Ohio nod, Gold served as a captain in his junior season – the first underclassmen to do so under head coach John Bluem. Gold is one of five players to start all 21 games in the 2009 campaign, taking his spot in the midfield to start the match in 66 of 67 career games. He tallied one assist on the offensive end, helping out on the game-winning goal by Austin McAnena in the Cleveland State contest Oct. 9.

Hailing from San Antonio, Texas, Gold is a mechanical engineering major and a previous Academic All-Big Ten pick.

Verhoff, Warzycha, Gold and the rest of the Buckeyes are gearing up for a spring season highlighted by a trip to Spain in March. Stay tuned to the soccer page of OhioStateBuckeyes.com for details.
