COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s tennis team opened competition at the 2013 ITA Midwest Regional Championships Thursday in Ann Arbor, Mich., with three Buckeyes still alive in the singles qualifying draw. Grâinne O’Neill, Ferny Angeles Paz and Sandy Niehaus will compete for a berth in singles main draw at 9 a.m. Friday. Ohio State and DePaul are the only programs with three representatives remaining in the singles qualifiying draw.
After a first round bye, O’Neill topped Michigan State’s Emily Meyers in straight sets, 7-5, 6-2. Niehaus, who also received a first-round bye, recorded a 6-0, 2-6, 6-2, victory vs. Spartan Athena Troiullot.
Angeles Paz posted back-to-back wins to earn a chance at clinching a spot in the singles main draw. After defeating Wisconsin’s Anastasia Trpolsykak in three sets, the Lima, Peru, native notched a 2-6, 7-6, 7-5, victory vs. IPFW’s Mayu Sato. Senior Noelle Malley fell to Wisconsin’s Sydney Rider, 0-6, 7-6, 6-2.
The first two rounds of main draw doubles are set to commence Friday at 2 p.m. Buckeyes Niehaus and Gabriella De Santis will face off against Illinois’ Alexis Casati and Jerricka Boone, while Noelle Malley and Nicole Flower will team up to compete vs. Toledo’s Chrissy Coffman and Katelyn Nguyen. Kowase and O’Neill will play Wisconsin’s Lauren Chypyha and Rider in the first round.
