COLUMBUS, Ohio – Freshman Taylor Vargo of the No. 16 Ohio State women’s swimming and diving team has been named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week, the conference announced today.
Vargo, a Sandusky, Ohio native, enjoyed a stellar weekend in Ohio State’s dual meet victory over No. 20 Michigan. She placed first in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:15.21) and second in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:03.68) and 400-yard medley relay (3:44.59). Her 200-yard breaststroke mark met NCAA provisional standards.
“Taylor is terrific young lady,” said head coach Bill Dorenkott. “She has a heck of a work ethic in both the classroom and pool. And, she loves being a Buckeye. Her win in the 200 breaststroke this past weekend was a great way to honor her team with a gutty hard-fought performance.”
With Vargo’s help, the Buckeyes defeated the Wolverines 181-172 in a meet that was not decided until the final relay. Ohio State returns to action this weekend when it hosts the annual Ohio State Winter Invite on Saturday, Feb. 8 and Sunday, Feb. 9.
