COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State synchronized swimming team will send its Scarlet and Gray teams to two different locations Saturday. The Scarlet team will travel to Oxford, Ohio, to take on Miami with events starting at 5 p.m at the Corwin M Nixon Aquatic Center. The Gray squad will head to Keuka, N.Y., to compete in the Keuka Invitational against Keuka and Penn State at 3 p.m at the Weed Physical Arts Center.
Last year, the Buckeyes placed second in the Keuka Invitational with 84 points, behind Canisius (98).
Last Time Out – William & Mary
The Buckeyes earned another first place team finish at William & Mary Feb. 15. Ohio State tallied 102 points to outscore Lindenwood (88) and William & Mary (74).
The Scarlet team placed first with a score of 95.333. It was the squad’s third first-place finish in the team routine this season.
Junior soloist Barbara Nesbitt captured her fourth first-place finish with a mark of 93.167. The tally is her highest mark of the season.
The Scarlet and Gray took the Top 2 spots in solo and trio. In duet, Meghan Kinney and Becky Kim placed first with a mark of 93.833. Jayme DeLancy and Deborah Shim were second with a score of 89.167.
Nesbitt, Shim and Michelle Theriault finished second (91.500) in the trio competition, behind teammates Carmen Moraes, Caitlin Stewart and Kinney who took first place with a score of 94.000.
Last Time Out- Richmond
Ohio State placed first with 90 points at Richmond Feb. 14. Lindenwood, who earned 72 points, came in second and Richmond finished third with 60 points.
The Scarlet squad earned its second first-place finish of the season with a score of 96.167. Barbara Nesbitt was first in the solo competition for the third time this season with a mark of 92.000.
The Buckeyes had two Top 2 finishes in the duet and trio routines. Becky Kim and Meghan Kinney scored a 92.333 to finish first in the duet competition, followed by teammates Jayme DeLancy and Deborah Shim, who tallied a mark of 90.167 for second place. In trio, Nesbitt, Shim and Michelle Theriault recorded a 90.833 to finish second behind teammates Caitlin Stewart, Carmen Moraes and Kinney, who were first with a score of 93.500.
Leading the Way
So far in 2009, the Scarlet team has the highest mark of any Buckeye team routine this season with a score of 96.167 at Richmond. Soloist Barbara Nesbitt has the top mark among the Ohio State soloists with a 93.167. In the duet competitions, the Scarlet and Gray are led by Meghan Kinney and Becky Kim, who posted a 93.833. Kinney, Carmen Moraes and Caitlin Stewart lead the Scarlet and Gray in trio with a score of 94.000. All high marks in the small routines were earned at William & Mary Feb 15.
North Regional Championships
Ohio State will host the 2009 North Regional Championship, at the Bill and Mae McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion March 7. The Buckeyes will seek their 18th regional title.
The Scarlet and Gray swept all four routines last year to tally 100 points earning them first place. Michigan (73) and Carleton College (69) finished second and third, respectively.
The Penn State synchronized swimming team placed second with a total of 69 points at Mary Washington Jan. 25. The Lady Lions competed against Mary Washington, George Mason and William & Mary at the event.
Keuka upset Canisius College in its season opener with a score of 33.5 to 30 points Nov. 21. The Storm placed second to Ohio State at the OSU Tri-Meet Jan. 26. The Buckeyes garnered 94 points while Keuka earned 61.
In its third event this season, Keuka College finished second, with 82 points, out of five teams at the Wheaton College Invitational Jan. 31. The host team took first with a total of 102 points.
The Storm competed at the Canisius Invitational Feb. 7. Canisius won the competition with 90 points. Keuka tied for second with Wheaten College (68).
Keuka fell to Wheaton College by eight points Feb.8.
Miami placed fourth with 38 points at the Jessica Beck Memorial Meet Feb. 7.
Remembering Jessica Beck
Ohio State hosted its third annual Jessica Beck Memorial Meet Feb. 7 at the Bill and Mae McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion. The Buckeyes came in first place with 91 points to top Lindenwood, Michigan, Miami and Ball State.
The Buckeyes’ Scarlet squad debuted its routine, which finished first in the team routine with a mark of 95.167, followed by the Gray team with a score of 92.667. The Scarlet and Gray swept the small routines, finishing in the Top 2 spots in solo, duet and trio.
Barbara Nesbitt competed in the solo competition where she earned first place with a score of 92.833. Katherine Green, who swam an exhibition routine and whose score did not count in the final point tally, finished second with a mark of 89.167.
In the duet event, Ohio State garnered the Top 2 spots with Jillian Penner and Meghan Kinney (91.167) taking first place and teammates Hannah Shively and Lauren Robinson (88.000) finishing second with their exhibition routine.
In trio, Deborah Shim, Michelle Theriault and Nesbitt (91.83) finished second, behind teammates Carmen Moraes, Caitlin Stewart and Kinney who garnered a mark of 93.500. Liz Derr, Monica Finnigan and Jackie Mundy also performed an exhibition routine in the trio competition earning a score of 85.833.
Ohio State will host the 2009 North Regional Championships at 2 p.m. March 7 at the Bill and Mae McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion.
