COLUMBUS, Ohio – James Sweeney has been named as the Ohio State Pistol coach and begins his duties July 1. His hiring is subject to the approval of the Board of Trustees. A former member of the Ohio State Athletics Department, Sweeney coached men’s gymnastics (1966-77) and the pistol (1985-87) team.%^$

%^$Sweeney earned his B.S.C. from Ohio State in 1957 in physical education. After graduation he taught and coached in Erie, Mich. for the Mason Consolidated Schools. He returned to Ohio State in 1960 as an instructor and earned his master’s degree in Curriculum Design that year. From 1962 to 1966 he was an assistant professor at Washington State University and was the head gymnastics coach. During the summers he returned to Columbus and received his Ph.D. in educational psychology in 1965.%^$

%^$He returned to Ohio State in 1966 as an assistant professor and became an associate professor in 1979. Sweeney retired in 1994 but continued to teach at the 25 percent level with emeritus status.%^$

%^$Donna Knisley has been named the volunteer assistant Pistol coach at Ohio State. A 1984 graduate of Milligan College (Tenn.) with a B.S. in education she currently is an office assistant for graduate studies for the Ohio State School of Music. An active competitive pistol and rifle shooter since 1988, she attended Advanced Shooting School and NRA Coaching School. Knisley was the State of Ohio Woman’s Air pistol Champion in 1991. %^$
