%^$COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State Department of Athletics held its annual Scholar-Athlete Banquet Wednesday to honor its student-athletes for their academic and athletic accomplishments.%^$

%^$The winners of the prestigious Big Ten Medal of Honor were women’s fencer Fane Groes (Copenhagen, Denmark) and men’s gymnast Jamie Natalie (Sr., Hockessin, Del.). The award is given annually by each member institution to the male and female athletes in the graduating class who have attained the greatest proficiency in both academics and athletics, as chosen by the Ohio State Athletic Council. The Big Ten Conference office established the award in 1914 and an additional award for the top female was instituted in 1982. This honor includes a $5,000 postgraduate scholarship for the recipients who would like to pursue a graduate or professional program at Ohio State.%^$

%^$Groes is one of only four athletes on the Ohio State fencing team to earn All-America honors three times. She has earned fencing titles in both the United States and her native Denmark as a member of the Danish National Team. In 1998, Groes was named Ohio State’s Rookie of the Year, leading the Buckeyes to the Midwest Team Championship in women’s foil. She also won an individual Danish national title that year. During her sophomore campaign, Groes captured the Midwest Individual Title, leading her squad to a second-place finish in the Midwest team championships, and was named Best Ohio State Female Fencer. In her senior year, she fought back from midseason knee surgery to earn All-America honors.%^$

%^$An economics major in the Honors Program, Groes was named to the Dean’s List six times and is a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars. She earned Academic All-Big Ten and Ohio State Scholar-Athlete recognition every eligible year. Her involvement in the university community includes memberships and chairs of social committees in the University College Student Council, the Undergraduate Economic Society and the Student-Athlete Advisory Board. She participated in the first Ohio State “Leader Shape” camp and was recognized with the John T. Mount Leadership Award. Groes plans to attend graduate school to earn a Ph.D. in economics and then pursue a career with the World Bank.%^$

%^$This year, Natalie capped his outstanding collegiate gymnastics career by leading the Buckeyes to both the Big Ten and NCAA team titles. Natalie won the all-around and high bar crowns at the Big Ten Championships en route to earning Big Ten Gymnast of the Year and All-Big Ten honors. At the 2001 NCAA Championships, he claimed the all-around title for the second-consecutive season and also earned All-America accolades on floor exercise and parallel bars. He also won the 2001 Nissen-Emery Award which is given annually to the best senior male collegiate gymnast in the country. As a junior, Natalie led the Buckeyes to a second-place finish in the Big Ten while claiming the individual Big Ten and NCAA Floor Exercise championships and the NCAA All-Around Title. He was named 2000 Ohio State Male Athlete of the Year. For three years, Natalie represented the United States all over the world as a member of the U.S. Senior National Team. He was the 1999 and 2000 USA Gymnastics high bar champion and was the only collegiate representative on the 2000 U.S. Men’s Gymnastics Olympic Team.%^$

%^$An exercise science major, Natalie earned Academic All-America, Academic All-Big Ten and Ohio State Scholar-Athlete recognition all eligible years. He was a University Scholar award winner and on the Dean’s List numerous times. He was a Student-Athlete Advisory Board representative where he participated in the alcohol/hazing subcommittee and volunteered as a speaker in elementary schools. Natalie also volunteered at Columbus Community Hospital and in the Ohio State Medical Center’s emergency room. Natalie will begin studies this fall at The Ohio State University Medical School with the career goal of becoming a doctor.%^$

%^$The other finalists for the 2001 Big Ten Medal of Honor were Chad Cacchio (football, Dublin, Ohio), Katie Edwards (synchronized swimming, Greer, S.C.), Anna Eng (synchronized swimming, West Chester, Pa.), Liz Hellickson (women’s rowing, Columbus, Ohio), Daren Lynch (men’s gymnastics, Londonderry, N.H.), Geoff Omiatek (men’s lacrosse, Horseheads, N.Y.), Mindy Stauffer (women’s rowing, Ashland, Ohio) and Paul Zelenak (pistol, Columbus, Ohio).%^$

%^$A total of 345 Ohio State student-athletes were recognized at the banquet, including the following seniors who were honored with annual awards.%^$

%^$Five student-athletes, Cacchio, Edwards, Hellickson, Omiatek and Jaime Rice (women’s fencing, West Chester, Ohio) received the Corwin A. Fergus Memorial Award. Fergus scholars are male or female student-athletes who have excelled in athletics, achieved academically (3.00 GPA minimum), demonstrated positive qualities of character and citizenship and shown potential for success in a graduate or professional program. Established in 1967, the award is given in memory of Corwin A. Fergus, a member of the Ohio State football team (1912-14), a graduate of the Ohio State School of Law and later a successful businessman. The award reflects his strong commitment to the pursuit of academic and athletic excellence and the Fergus’ positive contributions to society. The $5,000 postgraduate scholarships, which each are renewable for up to three years, can be utilized for graduate study or professional programs at Ohio State.%^$

%^$Cacchio and Natalie were the recipients of the John T. Sr. and Hulda E. Edwards Award. The award, which must be used within three years, is given to further the education of a student-athlete who is enrolling in professional or graduate school at Ohio State. The award reflects academic achievement of at least a 3.2 GPA, financial need, evidence of being admitted to postgraduate study at Ohio State, high quality of character, a positive attitude toward the American free enterprise system and participation in a varsity sport. Cacchio will attend dental school in the fall, while Natalie will enroll in medical school.%^$

%^$Sarah Nigh (Bucyrus, Ohio), a member of the women’s swimming team, received the Leann Grimes-Davidge Award which is a tribute to Grimes-Davidge’s contributions to athletics at Ohio State. The honor is given annually to a female athlete who reflects Grimes-Davidge’s outstanding qualities of athletic performance, scholarship, character, campus or community involvement and leadership. A member of the Ohio State women’s tennis team, Grimes-Davidge won four state and Big Ten titles. She graduated from OSU summa cum laude and received her master’s degree from Miami (Ohio) University where she served as the head women’s tennis coach.%^$

%^$Hellickson also received the Irving and Melvin Schottenstein Award, which has been awarded annually since 1976. The award was one of the first designed specifically to recognize and promote women’s achievements in intercollegiate athletics at Ohio State. It provides an outstanding female scholar-athlete with assistance for postgraduate studies at Ohio State. The award is based on demonstrated athletic and academic success as well as community contributions through involvement in civic or university organizations.%^$

%^$2000-01 Ohio State Scholar-Athletes
%^$The Ohio State University, the Athletic Council and the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics proudly salutes and celebrates the accomplishments of the following 345 student-athletes who have distinguished themselves by performing brilliantly in the classroom and in athletic competition this past year. All of these individuals have maintained a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better since the end of the winter quarter of their freshman year.%^$
