FAIRFAX, Va. – The No. 5 Ohio State University men’s volleyball team (7-2) concluded the weekend by topping George Mason (3-6) in straight sets (25-16, 26-24, 25-18). Jake Hanes was the hammer, drilling home 14 kills at a .458 attacking rate. He also added in three points from the service stripe, alongside four service aces for Nicolas Szerszen.
Hanes was responsible for 19.5 points in total, getting in on five block assists as well. Maxime Hervoir and Szerszen each chipped in nine kills with Hervoir doing so while swinging .333 (9-3-18). Aaron Samarin helped limit the Patriots offense by digging a team-high six balls.
SET 1: Hanes got it going right out of the gates, delivering five kills and two aces in the opening set. Szerszen was a monster, too, putting away four of five attempts for kills and connecting on three aces. After sprinting out to a 7-3 edge, the Buckeyes saw George Mason claw back to within a point a 15-14. That’s when Ohio State rattled off a 10-2 run though, closing out the set 25-16.
SET 2: Offensive numbers were at a premium in the second with a combined 19 attacking errors between the two squads. The lack of scoring runs resulted in 12 tied scores, including as late as 24-24. Szerszen’s subsequent kill lifted Ohio State ahead 25-24 and was followed by George Mason’s final hitting gaffe of the set to end it 26-24.
SET 3: Hervoir really came alive in the third while Hanes maintained his blistering pace. The Buckeyes posted three blocks and slammed the door shut, 25-18.
St. John Arena reopens its doors on Thursday (Feb. 8) when MIVA foe Ball State rolls into town for a 7 p.m. ET contest. Ohio State will then host another conference match Saturday (Feb. 10) at 7 p.m. versus No. 15 Fort Wayne.
