COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio State University women’s ice hockey player Lauren Spring has been named one of the five finalist for the 2018 Hockey Humanitarian Award, presented annually to college hockey’s “finest citizen” for leadership in community service.
The senior was among the 15 finalists for the 2017 Hockey Humanitarian Award as well. Spring is wrapping up her degree in physical education teaching while she took on the added responsibility of being a co-captain for the Buckeyes ahead of the 2017-18 season.
“We’re all incredibly proud of Lauren, both as a hockey player and as a woman,” OSU Head Coach Nadine Muzerall said. “Lauren sets the standard for what we want our players to be on and off the ice. She’s worked hard to push this team to new heights as a player, and she’s inspired the team to do more in the community. She lives Buckeye hockey through and through, we’re honored to have her on our team and we’re incredibly proud of her.”
In addition to the routine trips Spring makes to help with physical education projects in the Columbus community, the senior has helped organize multiple community service projects for the team, including trips to Meals on Wheels food bank events and helping run scoring tables at wheelchair rugby events. However, her community service work isn’t limited to the Columbus area.
Back in May of 2017 Spring joined 10 other Ohio State student-athletes on a “Soles for Souls” trip to Ecuador. On the trip Spring helped distribute shoes to those in need, while meeting with locals and helping foster positive relationships in a wholly unique community.
The 23rd recipient of the Hockey Humanitarian Award will be announced Friday, April 6th as part of the 2018 NCAA Men’s Frozen Four in St. Paul, Minnesota. Additionally, the Hockey Humanitarian Award Foundation will make a donation to the charity most important to each of the five finalists.
Spring and the No. 5 Buckeyes hit the road this weekend for a series at Minnesota State. Puck drop for the series opener is set for 7:07 p.m. ET on Friday.
