COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State softball team exploded for five runs in the bottom of the second and fourth innings and shut down visiting Marshall to earn a 10-0 victory over the Thundering Herd in five innings at Buckeye Field Wednesday. The victory in the first game of the doubleheader improved the Buckeyes to 30-8 overall on the year (2-2 Big Ten) while dropping MU to 10-18 in 2002. The win also was the 450th in the 13-year coaching tenure of Linda Kalafatis, OSU head coach.
Errors plagued the Herd on defense and allowed the Buckeyes to build an early lead. Stacy Roth (Sr., Wauseon, Ohio/Wauseon) opened the second inning with a single down the right line and advanced to second when Chrissy Fowler (Sr., Utica, Ohio/Wright State) reached on an error by the first baseman. Fowler stole second while Roth attempted to take third but was thrown out on the play. Sarah West (Sr., Galloway, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson) followed the play by grounding to short and reaching on a throwing error and pushed Fowler to third. Annie Dedic (Jr., Yorba Linda, Calif./Fullerton JC) then singled to left and drove in Fowler for the 1-0 lead with runners on the corners. Kristine Himes (Jr., Bolivar, Ohio/Tuscarawas Valley) put down a bunt in front of the plate and beat the throw to first while Dedic moved to second and West scored the second run of the game.
The Buckeyes continued to roll. JJ Johnson (Fr., La Mirada, Calif./La Mirada) followed Himes’ lead with a bunt of her own. Her sacrifice advanced Dedic to third and Himes to second. Jennifer Link (Jr., Yorba Linda, Calif./Sonora) then reached on an error that drove in Dedic for a 3-0 lead. With Anna Smith (Sr., Walnut, Calif./Diamond Bar) at the plate, Link broke for second and as the throw went to second, Himes came in to score on the double steal. Link came around to score when Smith drove a single down the right line.
With a 5-0 lead, OSU sent MU down in order over the next two innings with two strikeouts by Katie Chain (Jr., North Canton, Ohio/Hoover). After a quiet third, the Buckeyes came out firing in the fourth to conclude their scoring. Himes led off with a double to right center and came home on a Johnson single to left center. Link followed with a single and Allen loaded the bases with a single of her own. Roth followed with a sacrifice fly to center field that scored Johnson and allowed Link to advance to third on the throw. Link scored in the next at bat when Fowler singled to right center. West also added a single that drove in Allen and Fowler ended the scoring on a Dedic single to left.
For the game, OSU pounded out 13 hits to MU’s two. Chain played a big part in the win as she struck out six batters and coaxed the Herd into five fly outs and two ground outs. Himes went 2-for-2 and Fowler and Dedic both 2-for-3 from the plate with 10 different Buckeye hitters collecting a hit in the game.
The Buckeyes return to action at 3 p.m. Friday at home when the Wisconsin Badgers invade Buckeye Field for a Big Ten Conference game.
