COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State softball team were shut out today, 4-0, against the Wisconsin Badgers at Buckeye Field. The Badgers’ Andrea Kirchberg completed the game, giving up six hits and striking out 10 Buckeyes to improve the Badgers to 26-20 overall and 3-6 in the Big Ten. Ohio State falls to 22-20 overall and 4-7 in the Big Ten.
The Badgers started early posting four runs in the first three innings. Nikki Starry doubled to centerfield sending Chrissy Swartout home in the bottom of the first. The Badgers added more runs in the bottom of the third as Jennifer Girard and Jennifer Grill notched back-to-back RBI-singles.
Ohio State was without scoring leader and starting pitcher Stacy Roth, who was sick and unable to play. Without Roth, the Buckeyes were unable to score against the Badgers, posting only six hits in the game. Offensively, Anna Smith led the Buckeyes nailing a double and a single in the game.
Ohio State’s Katie Chain (9-7) went four innings in the loss, giving up four runs, walking one and fanning two in her 17th start this season. Kristi Martin, who was making her first appearance since March 23, shut down the Badger offense in the last two innings, allowing only two hits and striking out one.
Ohio State will next play Wright State in a doubleheader on Tuesday, April 25 at 3 p.m. Then the Buckeyes will be on the road next weekend, taking on Northwestern and Iowa.
