COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State softball team (46-16 overall in the regular season)had six team members selected All-Big Ten at the Big Ten Tournament Banquet, held in Ann Arbor, Mich., site of the Big Ten Tournament.
Katie Chain (So., North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) was selected as a pitcher on the first team. Wendy Allen was named Fresheman of the Year and was named to the second team as a utility player.
Chain finished conference play a perfect 10-0. She struck out 41 and carried a 0.64 earned run average. Overall, Chain tossed 11 shutouts and racked up 181 strikeouts, setting OSU records in both categories. Chain finished the regular season with a 23-5 record, one off the OSU record.
Allen was named Freshman of the Year for her play as an pitcher and outfielder. She hit .304 (17-for-56)in conference play. Overall, she batted .348 (55-for-158). In the pitching circle, Allen had a 0.68 ERA and went 6-4. She piled up 79 strikeouts in 71.2 innings of work.
Catcher Stacy Roth (Jr.,Wauseon, Ohio/Wauseon)and outfielder Anna Smith (Jr., Walnut,Calif./Diamond Bar) were also second-team selections. Roth hit .318 (56-for-176) and tied for a team-high 33 runs batted in, five home runs and three triples. In conference play, Roth hit .300 with a team-high three home runs and 12 RBI. She also had three doubles.
Smith set an OSU career-record with 68 stolen bases with the team-high 22 she swiped this season. Overall, she hit .316 (45-for-147) with four RBI and nine doubles. Smith was perfect on stolen base attempts in conference play, swiping eight on eight attempts. She batted .316 in 14 conference games before she broke her left hand against Michigan (April 22).
Kristi DeVries (Fr., Corona, Calif./Corona) and Jenn Link (So., Yorba Linda, Calif./Sonora)were third team selections. DeVries was named as a utility player and Link for her play at second base. In the pitching circle, DeVries set an OSU single-season record for strikeouts (171) and shutouts (6). She posted a 16-7 record with a 1.00 ERA. At the plate, DeVries hit .298 (44-for-152) with five doubles and 12 RBI.
Link led OSU with a .367 batting average (65-for-177) with six doubles, three triples and 18 RBI. She also led OSU with a .333 BA in conference play (19-for-57) with a double and a triple.
