%^$Columbus, Ohio – The Buckeyes (18-15) travel to Ann Arbor, Mich. to take on No. 12 Michigan in a doubleheader on Friday at 2 p.m. Ohio State will then head to East Lansing, Mich. for a two-game series against the Spartans on Saturday (2 p.m.) and Sunday (1 p.m.).%^$

%^$SCOUTING THE WOLVERINES
%^$Under 16-year head coach Carol Hutchins, the No. 12 Michigan Wolverines are 29-8 overall and 6-1 in conference action. The Wolverines were upset on Tuesday, falling to Central Michigan, 3-0, but came back in the second game of the doubleheader to win, 1-0. Michigan has won the last six of seven conference games this year, only losing to Wisconsin, 2-0, last Friday.%^$

%^$THE ALL-TIME SERIES
%^$Michigan leads the all-time series with a 17-54 record, winning the last 13 meetings. The Buckeyes last won against the Wolverines, 12-4, on May 3, 1995. Coach Linda Kalafatis is 0-9 against the Wolverines.%^$

%^$SCOUTING THE SPARTANS
%^$Last weekend, the Michigan State Spartans defeated Minnesota, 12-11, but had their games against Wisconsin were cancelled. The Spartans, who are 25-14 overall and 3-2 in the Big Ten, are coached by seventh-year head coach Jacquie Joseph.%^$

%^$LAST TIME OUT
%^$The Ohio State softball team defeated the Bowling Green Falcons, 6-2, on Tuesday at the BGSU Softball Field as the Buckeyes notched 10 hits for their 18th win this season. Senior pitcher Toni Hileman (Sr., Alliance, Ohio/Ohio University) collected the win, after only giving up two hits and no earned runs in four innings of play. She is now 4-5 for the season.%^$

%^$HITTIN’ HIMES AGAIN
%^$Ohio State prevailed over BGSU with Kristine Himes (Fr., Bolivar, Ohio/Tuscawas Valley) leading the Buckeyes offensively. She went 3-for-3, with one double and one RBI. She now holds a four-game hitting streak, a .247 batting average with 21 hits and 18 RBI this season.%^$

%^$CONGRATS TO CHAIN
%^$Freshman Katie Chain (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) broke the OSU freshman record for strikeouts in a season against Purdue on April 7. She now has fanned 92 batters this season and passed assistant coach Belinda Cernava (1992) for fourth place on the single-season record for K’s. Now averaging 7.6 strikeouts a game, Chain could pass the No. 1 mark for strikeouts held by Genice Turley (1994) who has 154.%^$

%^$IT COMES TO AN END
%^$Stacy Roth (So., Wauseon, Ohio/Wauseon) ended a career-high hitting streak of 15 games against Bowling Green on Tuesday. Roth ironically began her streak on March 5 against Bowling Green in the Florida International Tournament.%^$

%^$CRUISIN’ IN THE CONFERENCE
%^$Stacy Roth loves conference play, enough to bat .700 with four runs batted in this past weekend against Purdue and Indiana. Individually, she is ranked third in the conference with a.700 batting average and hits with seven.%^$

%^$MORE ON HIMES
%^$Kristine Himes notched her fourth home run of the season against Indiana (April 9) posting an OSU freshman record for HR’s. She passed teammate Stacy Roth (3) for first place.%^$

%^$GOING, GOING, GONE
%^$The Buckeyes have 15 home runs this season tying the season total of last season. They now only need four more home runs to break the team record of 18 set in 1994.%^$

%^$BIG DEFENSE
%^$Stacy Roth picked off two runners in the doubleheader against Indiana and is now 21-for-29 in pick-offs. Overall, she has a fielding percentage of .968 and is perfect (1.000) in conference games.%^$

%^$SMITH MOVES UP
%^$Anna Smith (So., Walnut, Calif./Diamond Bar) is now in fourth place on the OSU single-season record for thefts with 21. She only needs five more to pass Kathy Boettcher (1990) for first place on Ohio State’s season record for steals. Smith is ranked 15th in the nation with 21 and is averaging .76 steals per game. In the conference, Smith is second behind Penn State’s Gina Bianchini who has 25.%^$

%^$BUCKEYES RANKED
%^$In the 2000 NCAA Division I softball preseason poll, conducted by the NCAA Division I Women’s Softball Committee, the Ohio State Buckeyes are ranked eighth in the Mideast Region Poll. Michigan captured the No. 1 ranking with a 28-7 overall record as of April 10.%^$

%^$STATISTICALLY SPEAKING
%^$Within conference games, the Buckeyes are ranked third with a team BA of .359 in the Big Ten. Overall, the Buckeyes are fifth in the Big Ten in batting with a .271 team BA. In pitching the Buckeyes hold a team 2.19 ERA and are ranked seventh in the conference.%^$

%^$BIG TIME CONFERENCE
%^$In the April 9 USATODAY/NFCA Poll, the Big Ten Conference has two teams ranked in the Top 15. Michigan and Iowa are ranked No. 12 and No. 13, respectively. As a conference, the Big Ten ranks fifth in the nation with a batting average of .274 and seventh with an ERA of 2.27.%^$

%^$VS. THE RANKED
%^$Ohio State are 0-4 against ranked teams this season, after falling to then-No. 7 Louisiana State twice, No. 21 Cal-State Northridge and No. 25 Florida Atlantic.%^$

%^$WEIGEL’S CAREER NUMBERS…
%^$Renae Weigel only needs two more home runs to break the career record for home runs. She has a total of 11 in her career. She needs 12 more runs batted in to break the all-time career RBI total of 97 at OSU.%^$

%^$CAPTAIN WEIGEL
%^$Senior Renae Weigel was named by her teammates as captain of the 2000 softball team. As the only Buckeye who has been at Ohio State all four seasons, Weigel will resume her role as Ohio State’s top hitter and leader of the squad. Last season, the Coldwater, Ohio native had another breakout season, posting a single-season home run mark with six and finishing third overall in both batting average (.301) and conference BA (.324).%^$

%^$ADDITION TO THE COACHING STAFF
%^$Jaime Chenevey returns to the Buckeyes this season as an assistant coach. She was a four-time letterwinner and was selected as a second-team all-Big Ten selection as the Buckeyes’ catcher. She still holds the No. 2 spot on the Ohio State career home run ladder with nine. Last summer, She competed on the Akron Racers of the Women’s Professional Softbal League with former Buckeye Jodi Dolan. She is a graduate student of Ohio State in education.%^$

%^$ON THE ROAD
%^$The Buckeyes travel to Ann Arbor, Mich. for a doubleheader against No. 11 Michigan on Friday at 2 p.m. Ohio State wraps up the weekend in East Lansing on Saturday (2 p.m.) and Sunday (1 p.m.) against Michigan State. The Buckeyes end the road trip at Cleveland State for a single game on April 19 at 6:30 p.m.%^$

%^$The Buckeyes take on Minnesota and Wisconsin in the last Big Ten homestand on April 21-23.%^$

%^$On Deck In 2001
%^$Coach Kalafatis signed one of the best recruiting classes in the nation to be added next season. Wendy Allen (Moreno Valley, Calif.), Kristi DeVries (Corona Calif.) and Beth McAbier (Carrollton, Ohio) all signed letters of intents to attend Ohio State in 2001. Allen, a left-hand pitcher, was one-of-16 players in the nation to be named a National Fastpitch Coaches’ Association All-American. DeVries is a high school All-American pitcher who notched a 24-6 record last season with 321 strikeouts and 23 walks. McAbier, a shortstop, was a two-time all-conference pick and three-sport student-athlete at Carrollton High School.%^$

%^$LET’S CELEBRATE
%^$Ohio State will celebrate its 10-year anniversary of the 1990 Big Ten Championship this year. In 1990, Ohio State captured a 39-25 record, defeating Iowa to win the conference championship and head to the NCAA Tournament.%^$
