COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s tennis team will have five players representing the Scarlet and Gray during the quarterfinals of the singles main draw after a dominating performance Saturday at the 2011 USTA/ITA Division I Men’s Midwest Regional Championships. Three pairs of Buckeyes also won to advance to the quarterfinals of the doubles main draw. The event is taking place at the Varsity Tennis Center and Jesse Owens West Recreation Center in Columbus, Ohio.
Ohio State was 20-5 on the day in main draw competition, with two of the five losses coming because of head-to-head matchups with Buckeye teammates.
In a battle between two Buckeyes, Devin McCarthy defeated Hunter Callahan 6-4, 6-2 to become the first player to advance to the quarterfinals of the single draw. Ille Van Engelen was the next Buckeye to move on after beating Northwestern’s Josh Graves 7-6, 7-6. McCarthy, the five seed, will face Casey Watt of Notre Dame with a trip to the semifinals on the line.
Van Engelen will meet teammate Blaz Rola in the quarterfinals Sunday after Rola handed Connor Smith, another teammate, a 6-2, 6-0 loss. Rola, the No. 1 seed, moves to 5-1 in singles tournament action on the season.
Peter Kobelt, the sixth seed, was the fourth Buckeye to advance after a 6-3, 6-3 win over Greg Andrews of Notre Dame. He will meet Evan King of Michigan in the quarterfinals.
In the second round of singles main draw competition earlier in the day, Ohio State won the first five matches en route to a 7-1 mark in the round. Rola defeated Tim Kopinski of Illinois 6-2, 6-0 to complete the first match of the day. Callahan followed with a 6-1, 7-5 win vs. Michigan State’s Denis Bogatov and Smith was victorious against Alex Pelaez of Illinois State 2-6, 6-4, 6-4. Van Engelen ended Aaron Pfister’s run in the regional with a 7-5, 6-4 triumph, while McCarthy was the fifth Buckeye to win with a hard fought 7-6, 6-4 win against Ron Hulewicz of Michigan State.
Kobelt earned the Scarlet and Gray’s sixth win in a row in the first round with a quick 6-1, 6-2 win over Notre Dame’s Wyatt McCoy. Kevin Metka fell to King 7-5, 6-3 in the second round.
In doubles, Steven Williams and Metka made quick work of Northern Illinois’ Maksym Bartiuk and Roman Turtygin, 8-1, in the first doubles contest of the day. Rola and Smith teamed up after facing each other earlier to beat Alex Buzzi and Micahel Zhu 8-2.
McCarthy and Van Engelen gave Ohio State a 3-0 record in the second round of doubles with an 8-2 victory vs. Detroit’s Nick Tolomei/Jay Joshi. Nelson Vick and Callahan also advanced with an 8-4 win over Northwestern’s Alexandru Pasareanu and Raleigh Smith. After earning a bye in the opening round, Buchanan and Kobelt dealt Denis Bogatov and Harry Jadun an 8-3 loss.
The Buckeyes continued to impress during the third round of doubles. McCarthy and Van Engelen won 8-6 against Leo Sarria and Tomas Stillman, while Buchanan and Kobelt easily won 8-1 vs. David Stabley and Pablo Nunez.
Rola and Smith continued their winning ways, beating Billy Pecor and Samuel Keeton 8-3 to move on. Falling in the third round were Williams and Metka , as well as Callahan and Vick.
The quarterfinals of main draw singles action will take place Sunday from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Varsity Tennis Center. Quarterfinal and semifinal action of the doubles main draw will start at 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., respectively.
