COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State Department of Athletics has announced the creation of the Shawn Springs/Majority of One Post-Graduate Scholarship. The scholarship is being made possible through a $100,000 gift from former OSU football player Shawn Springs.
“I’m happy I am able to give back to my university,” Springs said. “The Majority of One program is very important to me. Ohio State provided me with great opportunities and I’m thankful that I can contribute in some way so that others have the same opportunities.”
Springs, currently a professional football player with the Seattle Seahawks, will graduate from Ohio State after the 2002 Fall Quarter. He is currently taking courses at the University of Washington to satisfy his bachelor’s degree requirements in sociology. Those credits then will transfer to Ohio State.
Since entering the NFL in 1997, Springs has generously volunteered to take part in numerous charitable events, including Junior Achievement and Verizon Reads. He also has founded the Springs for Life Foundation – a non-profit organization that focuses on creating opportunities for underprivileged and at-risk youth. Most recently, Springs was one-of-three nominated by the Seahawks for the NFL Man of the Year award.
Springs played football at Ohio State from 1994-96. In 1996, he established himself as one of the top cornerbacks in college football by winning All-America and Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year honors. That year, the Buckeyes won both the Big Ten and Rose Bowl Championships.

While at Ohio State, Springs became the first president of The Majority of One. Now in its seventh year at OSU, The Majority of One is an innovative support program that was designed, developed and implemented to address the emotional, social, intellectual and physical needs of minority-student athletes. In 1995, it officially became a student organization at The Ohio State University.
“We are very proud of Shawn Springs,” said James Hall, founder and advisor of the Majority of One. “He is a great example of contributing to the holistic development of the student-athlete in college and beyond. We thank him for his gift but more importantly for being such a great representative of The Ohio State University.”
