COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Scarlet team scored twice in the bottom of the sixth inning to pull away for a 4-1 victory over the Gray team on Friday evening at Buckeye Field. At the plate, freshman Alex Vargas and senior Keelia Nester had RBI during the sixth while sophomore Lena Springer went four innings and gave up just one earned run.
Gray threatened in the top of the second, loading the bases with one with Maddie Marotti at the plate. Marotti, however, lined into a double play back to pitcher Olivia O’Reilly, who caught the line drive and then immediately threw out Cassidy Clough at third base.
Maddy McIntyre walked to lead off the top of the third, but a fly out from Erika Leonard and another double play ended the threat. The team’s then remained scoreless until the bottom of the fifth when Conrad led off the inning with a triple and scored on a Watkins single.
In the sixth, redshirt junior Alex DiDomenico came on in relief of starter Shelby Hursh and gave up a lead-off double to Alex Bayne. Springer sacrificed Bayne to third and then Vargas delivered a RBI double to make the score 3-1. Nester tacked on an insurance run with an RBI single to third base.
Gray refused to go quietly, however, scoring a run in the top of the seventh on an Ashley Goodwin double that scored McIntyre, who led off the inning with a double to left centerfield. Springer recovered, though, and retired Jesse Machovina and Clough in order to end the game.
In the circle, Hursh got the start for the Gray team and pitched five innings, giving up six hits and two runs with six strikeouts. O’Reilly went three innings for the Scarlet team, surrendering one hit while walking four. Springer had three strikeouts in four innings while allowing five hits.
