Recycling initiative rates as one of top programs in U.S.

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Like many championship caliber teams, The Ohio State University’s sustainability program is gaining momentum as the season wears on. Much like its Buckeye counterpart on the football field, the recycling initiative is looking to close out the year with an impressive November.

The foundation has been laid for a strong finish as the recycling program turned in its best game-day in its four-year history Oct. 23 vs. Purdue. Not only did the initiative set a record with a 68.5 recycling rate and exceed its per capita goal of .3 pounds per person, it also rated as one of the nation’s leading performers in the Environmental Protection Agency’s Game Day Challenge, a national competition between 91 colleges and universities to see who has the best recycling performance at their football game.

“Ohio State had one of the best Saturdays so far this season,” Corey Hawkey, OSU’s Sustainability Coordinator, said. “During the Purdue game, the Buckeyes recycled almost 17 tons of materials and only threw away about 7.5 tons between Ohio Stadium and tailgate lots. This resulted in the highest recycling rate ever for Buckeye recycling (68.5 percent).”

Against Purdue, more than 75 percent of trash was recycled in Ohio Stadium, while the tailgater efforts also had a 2010-best 61.9 percent sustain clip.

Collecting approximately 75 tons during the first six home games, the program has experienced successful Saturday after successful Saturday this season. Compared to this time last year, trash in and around the Horseshoe is down 17 percent and recycling is up 83 percent.

“We really can’t do this without all of you – this team effort from grounds, operations, hauling, sorting, management, communications, and the fans – is what makes it so successful,” Hawkey said.
