Scarlet Bats Collect 16 Hits in 11-3 Win Friday Night

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Scarlet took game one of the 2017 Scarlet & Gray World Series, spraying 16 hits at the dish for an 11-3 win over Gray Friday night at Bill Davis Stadium. Game two of the series begins at 2 p.m. ET Saturday and admission is free (parking: Pay-N-Display). Scarlet left-handed starter Connor Curlis struck out seven in 3.2 innings of work. In all, the Scarlet pitchers struck out 13 Gray hitters in the win.

IN THE BOX SCORE
For Scarlet, Tyler Cowles had a four-hit day with two runs scored and one RBI. Brady Cherry went 2-for-5 with a double, home run, four RBI and two runs scored. Conner Pohl was 3-for-5 with a RBI and two run scored and Scottie Seymour was 3-for-4 with two doubles, two runs scored and two RBI. For the Gray team, Dominic Canzone was 3-for-4 with a double, run scored and RBI and Aaron Hughes was 2-for-3 with a double and RBI.

SCARLET STRIKES FIRST
The Scarlet squad tallied three runs on five hits vs. right-handed pitcher Ryan Feltner in the bottom of the first. Brady Cherry got it started with a RBI double to the gap in left center on a 3-2 count vs. Feltner. RBI singles by Tyler Cowles and Kobie Foppe made it 3-0.

GRAY GETS ON THE BOARD
The Gray team plated its first run in the top of the second when Canzone ripped a RBI double down the right field line for his second hit of the evening. Canzone scored Jake Ruby on the play.

SCOTTIE ADDS TO SCARLET LEAD
Scottie Seymour extended the lead to four runs for the Scarlet team when he connected on a 0-2 pitch for a two-run double, pushing Kobie Foppe and Cowles around the dish.

TEAMS EXCHANGE RUNS IN THE FOURTH
Aaron Hughes
knocked a RBI double down the left field line for the second Gray run in the top of the fourth. Matt Carpenter reached third base after a single, error and stolen base before the base hit by the OSU rookie. In the bottom half, Scarlet was given a run when a ball was dropped in shallow left center field, allowing Cowles to score from first base to make it 6-2 in favor of the home squad.

MORE RUNS FOR SCARLET
The Scarlet bats continued to swing a hot bat in the bottom of the fifth with two runs on three hits. Conner Pohl ripped a single back up the middle to score Seymour before a second Gray error scored the eighth run. Griffan Smith got Gray squad out of a bases-loaded jam on a called strike three to limit the damage.

The Scarlet squad opened the game in the bottom of the sixth when Cherry launched a three-run home run over the left field wall to make it 11-3.
