COLUMBUS, Ohio – Carey Fagan, Ohio State head women’s gymnastics coach, announced Monday Jay Santos has been named an assistant coach for the Buckeyes. A former standout gymnast for the University of Massachusetts, Santos comes to Ohio State after serving as women’s team director at Somersault Gymnastics Center in Stoughton, Mass., for the past four years.

Santos becomes the second assistant coach selected by Fagan, who was named head coach at Ohio State June 13. William Lorenz was named Fagan’s first assistant coach June 16.

“Jay will bring a unique perspective to our program as he is coming in as the head optional coach from a private age-group club,” Fagan said. “He is going to make a strong impact in the gym and will be implementing new training techniques. Jay will provide expertise on all four events.”

Santos graduated from Massachusetts in 1995 after competing with the men’s gymnastics team for four years. He was voted a co-captain three times and was twice named Most Improved Gymnast. His senior year he helped lead Massachusetts to the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference championship.

Santos has coached at Somersault for the past eight years. For his first four years he split time between the men’s and women’s teams before taking over the women’s program in 2001. He was responsible for all facets of the women’s program and produced several junior Olympic state champions and regional qualifiers.

From 1997-2001 Santos also was a nationally rated men’s gymnastics judge, working collegiate dual meets as well as junior Olympic state meets and regional championships.
