COLUMBUS, Ohio – Anna Sanford, a junior on the No. 3-ranked Ohio State women’s tennis team, was named Big Ten Women’s Tennis Athlete of the Week. The native of Westerville, Ohio, picked up five wins last week, with a 3-0 singles record and 2-0 doubles mark, as Ohio State posted three team victories.
In victories over Rutgers, Dayton and No. 37 Maryland, Sanford posted five combined wins. In singles, she dropped just four total games in the three matches combined (just one in her two B1G matches). Her first two wins were on court two, with a victory on court three vs. No. 37-ranked Maryland. In doubles, Sanford and Sandy Niehaus won 6-1 vs. Rutgers and 6-2 vs. Dayton on court one and were ahead vs. Maryland when doubles was clinched.
Sanford is 16-11 overall this year, with a 10-7 dual mark, and has won her last five matches. In doubles she is 15-12 overall and 11-6 in the spring. She is 5-0 in B1G singles and 4-0 in B1G doubles.
In the ITA rankings this week, Sanford is ranked 74th in singles and pairs with Francesca Di Lorenzo to form the No. 83-ranked doubles team.
Four other Buckeyes are ranked in singles, with Di Lorenzo No. 1, Niehaus No. 75, Miho Kowase No. 86 and Gabriella De Santis No. 93. Di Lorenzo and Kowase are ranked 22nd in doubles and De Santis and Niehaus form the No. 39-ranked doubles tandem.
Sanford and the No. 3-ranked Buckeyes (19-2) are on the road this weekend, playing at Iowa Friday and at Nebraska Sunday.
