Starting Five, Plus One
•    Thad Matta is 22-5 vs. Big Ten coaches in their first year in the conference. The Buckeyes are 14-0 in the Matta era vs. Big Ten coaches making their first trip to Columbus. Rutgers, who joined the Big Ten a season ago, is making its first trip to Columbus this week. Greg Gard of Wisconsin is in his first Big Ten season. Ohio State travels to Madison for a Feb 4 game (7 p.m./ESPN or ESPN2). The Badgers do not play in Columbus this year.
•    JaQuan Lyle rates No. 2 nationally among freshmen in total assists with 84. Classmate Daniel Giddens is No. 5 in total blocks with 35 in the 2015-16 freshman class. As a team, Ohio State is No. 7 nationally in total blocks with 103. The Buckeyes are No. 19 in defensive rebounds with 481 and No. 19 spot in field goals percentage defense (.381/386-1,012).
•    Ohio State has shot better from the field than its opponent in 15 of 17 games this season and is 11-6 to date. Ohio State outshot 23 opponents a year ago and was 23-0 in those games. In the Matta era, the Buckeyes have outshot foes 301 times and are 273-28 in those games (.907).
•    Keita Bates-Diop scored a career-high 24 points to go with 10 rebounds vs. SCSU. Trevor Thompson added 10 points and 10 boards to mark the fourth time this season the Buckeyes posted a pair of double-doubles in a single game. Ohio State is 135-51 (.725) all-time when two players record a double-double. The last time an OSU duo recorded double-doubles in the same game four times was during the 2007-08 season. The last time Ohio State recorded double-doubles in five or more games was during the 1982-83 season when it happed five times. Granville Waiters and Tony Campbell were the two players with double-doubles in all five.   
•    Thad Matta has coached 410 games at Ohio State, the third most in school history. Harold G. Olsen (1923-46) and Fred Taylor (1959-76), have reached 400 or more games at Ohio State. Olsen coached 456 (259-197) and Taylor 455 (297-158).
•    Currently, Matta has the second longest tenure in the Big Ten with 12 years on the sidelines in Columbus. Tom Izzo at Michigan State has been with the Spartans over the last 21 seasons.

Ohio State vs. Rutgers Series
Ohio State and the Scarlet Knights are meeting for just the third time in history and in just the second game as members of the Big Ten Conference. Rutgers joined the Big Ten in 2014-15 after one season in the American Athletic Conference (2013-14) and 18 years in the Big East (1996-2013). The first meeting between the Buckeyes and Scarlet Knights was a 97-96 Rutgers win at Madison Square Garden Dec. 30, 1978 in the ECAC Holiday Tournament. The Buckeyes evened the series at one game apiece a season ago in Piscataway. Ohio State won that game 79-60 Feb. 8, 2015.

Last Time vs. Rutgers
Ohio State freshman D’Angelo Russell recorded a triple-double with 23 points, 11 assists and 11 rebounds in Ohio State’s 79-60 victory over Rutgers on the road Feb. 8, 2015 in Piscataway, N.J. Russell played 35 minutes, was 8 of 13 from the field, had one steal and two turnovers handling the ball most of the game. Jae’San Tate added 20 points and Keita Bates-Diop had 14 to help the Buckeyes to their fourth time in five games. Bishop Daniels had a season-high 17 points for the Scarlet Knights, and Junior Etou added 12 points and 11 rebounds. Ohio State never trailed, built a 21-point lead in the first half and extended it to 25 early in the second with Russell, Tate and Bates-Diop doing most of the damage.
 
Scouting the Scarlet Knights
Rutgers enters the game with the Buckeyes with an overall record of 6-11 and 0-4 in the Big Ten. The Scarlet Knights were 6-7 in non-conference play. Freshman guard Corey Sanders leads the team offensively with 13.2 points per game. Junior forward Deshawn Freeman, who has missed the last few weeks with a knee injury, averages 13.1 points a game. Sophomore guard Mike Williams contributes 12.2 points a contest to round out the Scarlet Knights’ top three offensive players. Sophomore forward D.J. Foreman is the squad’s top rebounder with 5.8 caroms a game.           

Ohio State vs. The Big Ten
Ohio State begins its 104th season as a member of the Big Ten Conference in 2015-16. The Buckeyes own an overall record of 786-694 against current league members. Thad Matta, in 16 seasons as a head coach, owns an overall record of 161-71 vs. league members, including a mark of 157-68 while coaching the Buckeyes.
