%^$COLUMBUS, Ohio– The Ohio State rowing team’s Varsity Eight ‘A’ boat qualified for the Grand Final in the Jessop Whittier Cup by finishing first in their preliminary heat Saturday at the Crew Classic in San Diego, Calif. The team finished with a time of six minutes, 45.96 seconds, 1.95 seconds ahead of second-place University of California. The Buckeyes’ time was the second best posted in the either heat of the preliminary competition only behind the Washington Huskies who finished at 6:44.10 seconds.%^$

%^$OSU’s Varsity Eight ‘B’ boat finished second in its preliminary heat in the Women’s JV competition, also qualifying it for their Grand Final Sunday. The ‘B’ team finished with a time of 6:58.60 seconds, just 3.8 seconds behind the University of Virginia.%^$

%^$Andy Teitelbaum, Ohio State head coach, said he was happy with both of his teams’ performances Saturday.%^$

%^$”It was great racing this morning,” Teitelbaum said. “There were a lot of fast crews and hopefully we’ll be able to get in front of most or all of them tomorrow. We were glad to win the heat and get one of the better lanes for tomorrow afternoon’s final.”%^$

%^$Both Buckeye teams now prepare for Grand Finals in of each of their respective competitions Sunday. The ‘B’ Boat will race in the Women’s JV Final at 1:10 PDT against Virginia, Washington, Clemson, Cal and Texas. The ‘A’ boat will then race for the Jessop-Whittier Cup against Cal, Notre Dame, Washington State, Virginia, Stanford and defending national champion Washington at 2:40 PDT.%^$

%^$This is the third time Ohio State rowing has competed in the Crew Classic and the first time any Buckeye boat has reached a Grand Final.%^$
