Buckeye First Varsity Eight goes unbeaten on the weekend, up next are Big Ten Championships May 2 in Columbus

COLUMBUS, Ohio The Ohio State rowing team battled both opponent Washington State and Mother Nature Sunday morning at Griggs Reservoir, with gusting winds battering boats down the racecourse in Columbus. The Buckeyes won both the First Varsity Eight and First Varsity Four races, as well as getting their first race action against conference foes Michigan and Michigan State before the upcoming Big Ten Championships, hosted by Ohio State May 2.

FIRST VARSITY EIGHT
Eighth-ranked Ohio State came out of the start slightly better than Washington State, growing an early two-seat lead at the 200 meter mark into a six-seat gap at the 500 meter mark. Gusts of wind picked up on the course in the second 500 as the boats stroked evenly through the water. The Buckeyes had on open-water lead in the third 500 meters of the race before the Cougars made their push. Ohio State held on in the end, cruising across the finish line at 7:03.42 with Washington State coming across at 7:13.62.

SECOND VARSITY EIGHT
An early five-seat lead by the Ohio State Second Varsity Eight boat at the 750 mark was not enough to hold off Washington State, who responded to the Buckeye challenge and evened the race at the 100 meter mark. Headwinds were really starting to affect the action on the racecourse, a factor that got progressively worse as the regatta reached its conclusion. The 1250 mark saw the Cougars surge into a three-seat lead, and from there put distance between the boats, finishing first at 7:08.70 with Ohio State in second with a time of 7:15.07.

FIRST VARSITY FOUR
A quick start was the key for the Ohio State First Varsity Four against Washington State, using a stroke rate in the low to mid 30’s and finding a half boat advantage at the 500 meter mark. The Buckeyes pushed their lead to just short of a boat length by the 1000 meter mark and broke an open water lead at the 1250 meter mark. The wind coming down the racecourse was just starting to make conditions rough, but the Buckeyes battled through and took first with a time of 8:12.55, followed by the Cougars at 8:19.40.

SECOND VARSITY FOUR
The Ohio State Second Varsity Four hit the water against Michigan and Michigan State. The Spartans ran out in front early, gaining a quick boat length lead over both the Wolverines and Buckeyes, who were running even. The midway point had Michigan State still leading and Ohio State was falling off the pace. Michigan surged forward as the boats neared the homestretch, striking the Spartan lead as the Ohio State trailed by several lengths of open water. Michigan took first with a time of 8:06.00, followed by Michigan State at 8:12.66 and Ohio State at 8:27.94.

FIRST NOVICE EIGHT
After Washington State jumped out to an early half boat length lead at the 750 meter mark in the First Novice Eight race, the Buckeyes made a move and began closing the gap between the two boats. The Cougars stretched it back out, however, and by the 1250 meter mark had extended their lead to three quarters of a boat length. Washington State held on for the win, crossing the line at 7:13.78, while Ohio State crossed at 7:19.26.

SECOND NOVICE EIGHT
The only Second Novice Eight race of the day was a preview for the Big Ten Championships, just two weeks away at Griggs Reservoir, pitting the Buckeyes against Michigan and Michigan State. The Wolverines and Spartans held the early lead in the race, with the Ohio State boat trailing by a boat length at the 500 meter mark. Michigan surged into the lead by the midway point, a lead they would not surrender, crossing the line at 7:10.6, followed by the Spartans at 7:18.3 and a late charging Ohio State boat at 7:22.6.
