COLUMBUS, Ohio The Ohio State First Varsity Eight has been named the Big Ten Conference Boat of the Week the league announced Tuesday. It is the first weekly laurel for the Buckeyes this season.

 The 16th-ranked 1V8 upset the seventh-ranked Virginia crew in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge April 4 at Lake Monticello, Va. The Buckeye boat beat the Cavaliers by 1.9 seconds, crossing the finish line in 6:33.4, while Virginia finished in 6:35.3. The crew of Claudia Wurzel, Sara Wallace, Ingrid Aasaaren, Katie Flarida, Claudia Herpertz, Susanne Herbrand, Johnna Burns, Ulrike Denker and Erika Benford earned its first win of the 2009 season.

The time set by the Scarlet and Gray is a team best so far this season among eight boats and also was the best time among all eight boats in Virginia.

The honor for the First Varsity Eight is its first since earning back-to-back weekly conference accolades March 26 and April 2, 2007. Last season, the Ohio State Second Varsity Eight was named boat of the week April 9.
