COLUMBUS, Ohio In 73-degree temperatures at Redwood Shores , the Ohio State rowing team commenced the 2009 spring season at the Pac-10 Challenge Presented by Windermere Real Estate in Redwood, City, Calif., Saturday. The Buckeyes make the annual trip out west and for the first time this season head coach Andy Teitelbaum was able to watch three Ohio State competition boats compete head-to-head with UCLA and Stanford on day one.

On the waters for the Scarlet and Gray were the Ohio State First Varsity Eight, Second Varsity Eight and First Varsity Four the same three boats that compete in the NCAA championships.

Ohio State began the day against UCLA to start off the morning races. The No. 12 1V8 started things off for the Buckeyes and finished 3.7 seconds behind the Bruins, who are receiving votes in the March 25 CRCA/USRowing rankings. The crew of Claudia Wurzel, Sara Wallace, Ingrid Aasaaren, Katie Flarida, Claudia Herpertz, Susanne Herbrand, Johnna Burns, Ulrike Denker and Erika Benford crossed the finish line in 6:37.7, while UCLA crossed in 6:34.0.

Up next was the 2V8, which went 2-0 on day one, first beating the Bruins by 24.6 seconds. In its impressive first time out in 2009, the group of Anniken Ellingsen, Farrah Edwards, Caroline McPherson, Ellen Heister, Erin Shropshire, Tess Prescott, Peta-Leigh Dakyns, Charlott Goldstein and Samantha Getz concluded the race in 6:42.3 and UCLA pulled in at 7:06.9.

The 1V4 helped Ohio State finish the morning session 2-1 when Jill Mohr, Sara Reardon, Lindsey Titus, Cleonice Renzetti and Kristin DiJosie beat the Bruin 1V4 by 20.9 seconds. The Scarlet and Gray clocked in at 7:31.8 and UCLA finished in 7:52.7.

The Second Varsity Eight began the afternoon session for Ohio State against Stanford and once again it proved dominant, racing to the finish line 12.4 seconds (7:04.2-7:16.6) before the Cardinal.

Racing the No. 3 First Varsity Boat, Ohio State crossed the finish line in 7:04.2, while Stanford, which received three first-place votes March 25, recorded a time of 6:56.8.

Wrapping up day one competition, the Buckeye First Varsity Four also had its hands full against the Cardinal, finishing nearly three seconds behind (8:26.4-8:23.7).

Action at the Pac-10 Challenge Presented by Windermere Real Estate concludes Sunday. The Buckeyes will face California in dual competition.
