COLUMBUS, Ohio – Reece Humphrey, an Ohio State wrestling letterwinner from 2006-10, won the 60kg/132-pound weight class at the 2011 U.S. Open at the Cleveland Public Auditorium in Cleveland, Ohio. Humphrey has now advanced to the U.S. World Team Trials, which will take place in June.
The Indianapolis, Ind., native won four consecutive matches en route to the title. He opened the tournament with a 7-0, 7-0 technical fall win over Jeremiah Biddle. A 1-0, 3-0 decision ensued vs. Drew Headlee in the quarterfinals. As one of four remaining wrestlers in the bracket, Humphrey faced Mike Zadick and won 1-0, 2-0. In the final against Shawn Bunch, Humphrey rallied from a 4-0 loss in the first period to win the next two periods 1-0, 2-0.
Humphrey wrapped up his career at Ohio State as a four-time NCAA championship qualifier with a 117-33 overall record. The 2009 Big Ten and NCAA Championships runner-up at 133 pounds, Humphrey also was the 2010 Big Ten runner-up (141).
